This DEFINES Value

For a brief book this title summarizes very well topics which the larger books tend to present in academically interesting ways but which tax the limited time of busy clinicians who just need quick refreshers. Likewise, this book presents relevant clinical material often missed by the pocket books. Eg., transfusion practices and the "electronic" crossmatch; current perioperative fluid strategies (restricted volume); LR for CKD patients w/ slightly elevated K, etc. Well worth the price. Ordered paper AND Kindle versions.

Good primer

This is an excellent primer for family medicine residents and medical students doing work in anesthesia. This primer is aimed at this generation of learner. Our department has received compliments for using this as a reference. Thank you to all who contributed and thank you Dr. Sullivan. It is a great resource to learners!

I quite like this book.

For example, it has a very nice discussion of radiometry. It even has sample questions so that you can verify your understanding.

On a number of topics, it has a clear discussion that has enough depth that you will not need additional references. This includes the ideas of NEP and detector noise.

Solid reference guide for general IR detection concepts. For example the radiometry section is good. The only other books I would recommend are John David Vincent's book on IR detectors and Rogalski's book if you need a technology specific review.

Some of these reviews are dumb!

I'm the author and publisher of this book. It sold 13,000 copies which is a lot for this type of book. I have a few left and sell some every month. I still get emails from people who enjoyed the book but I won't print it again.
I don't appreciate the reviews that badmouth the book as out of date when it's obviously been eight years since it was written. It's easy for somebody to post a negative review even if they don't have a clue.
And it was never intended to be an engineering text, just some understandable explanations of a few complicated topics. The damper (shock absorber) section is still the most comprehensive and understandable explanation available.
I'm proud of the book and pleased that I had the courage and motivation to put it out there.

The definitive work on racing suspensions.

Inside Racing Technology is a good primer on race car suspensions and aerodynamics. While Haney's writing style is annecdotal, and his interviews are pure transcripts, the information to be found in here is second to none. Jeff Braun in acknowledged to be one of the foremost engineers in professional racing. Gifted not only with a keen analytical mind, but also the ability to communicate that knowledge, Braun and Haney illuminate much of the black art of race car setup.
At time, the text gets mired in details, and the overall flow makes for a difficult read. However, the content makes this a reference work for anyone wanting to get a fundamental understanding of topic.
Not for everyone, but if you're a race fan and technically/mechanically oriented, you'll find this worthwhile.

Very friendly book on racing technical topics

This book discusses racing technical topics in a very friendly manner, without complicated formulas that you can find in numerous "vehicle dynamics" books. The latter books have little practical value for a beginner racer, because 95% of their graphs and formulas are nowhere to apply.

The author brilliantly uses his favourite style of describing complex topics in a form of interview with appropriate experts. There are very noteworthy discussions with tire compounders from Goodyear and Firestone, and the other tire experts. These interviews motivated the author to create the entire new book dedicated exclusively to the tire, as the most complex component of the car. I highly recommend "Racing & High Performance Tire" by Paul Harney in addition to this book.

The chapter on shock absorbers is the best piece of information I ever read about dampers. It's very easy to understand, but covers every important aspect of a shock absorber: bump and rebound, single-and dual-tube design, cavitation, emulstion and gas-bag shocks, washer stacks and external adjustments, different valve types, high-speed vs low speed damping, shock dynamometer, and so on.

The book finishes with a very impressive interview with Carroll Smith, the author of "Prepare to Win" and the respective titles. Carroll answers such complicated questions there like what are the two things that the best drivers feel much better than the mediocre drivers: "It's real simple. They're feeling two things. One is the slip angle of the tire, and the other is the self-aligning torque of the tires, on all four tires".

About the Author
Keikaku (Project) Itoh was born in Tokyo in 1974. He graduated from Musashino Art University. In 2007, he debuted with Gyakusatsu Kikan (Genocidal Organ) and took first prize in the "Best SF of 2007" in SF Magazine. He is also the author of Metal Gear Solid: Guns of the Patriots, a Japanese-language novel based on the popular video game series. After a long battle with cancer, Itoh passed away in March 2009. Itoh wrote Harmony, a Japan SF and Seiun Award-winning novel in the same setting as Genocidal Organ, while in the hospital receiving treatment for the disease.

A Fitting End for an Amazing Hero

Metal Gear Solid: Guns of the Patriots, written by Project Itoh, is a novelization of the bestselling video game of the same name. To any newcomers, I highly recommend reading the (not-too-great) novelizations of the first two games. The premise follows Solid Snake for one final mission as he sets out to stop his twin brother Liquid from taking control over every nanomachine in the world. The story is a lot to take in at first, but once the ball gets rolling it's impossible to put this book down.
The lines are funny, and most are taken straight from the video game. The characters actually stay in character, unlike in the other two novels by a different author. But most importantly you can tell that Project Itoh was a fan of the series. The book, instead of being told in a third person manner, is narrated by Otacon the entire time, which adds depth to a fan-favorite character. It also shows Snake through a different light.
I highly recommend this book to any Metal Gear Solid fan, especially if you were disappointed by the other novels. It is a shame the author passed away so early, as he was slated to write a novelization of Snake Eater and Peace Walker.

Narrative

This book is a narrative recounted for the most part by Otacon. There are NO boss fight recounts, like they never happened. You do get a little more background into other things while missing some others. It's a pretty good read for the fans, maybe a little confusing to others.

Eye have you!

Since the universe will not allow me to play this game on my 360, I am forced to read the book to find out what happened. I can’t speak to the differences between the game and the book, but from reading the afterword by Kojima it’s clear that Project Itoh (Is that really his name? Sounds like a public-works organization that builds interstate bridges or something.) has retold the story using Otacon as the narrator. It’s easily the most understandable and conclusive of Metal Gear narratives. Managing to summarize and wrap up everything while clearing the slate for the future. Sadly, the author of this book passed away in 2009, it’s too bad because he had a unique relationship with Metal Gear and Hideo Kojima in particular. This is a solid book (sorry) and it is revealing that Kojima let the author filter the story and retell it in his own way.
