Great info at a great price!
By Barry Lovelace
After checking this out I can honestly say that the program does indeed provide a great program for softball players who may have waited too long to prepare for the upcoming season and do not have much time left or just looking for a new way to train and prepare for their sport. Either way, as Marc mentions, this is for the serious softball player who basically wants to crank up their game. I looked at all the exercises and if followed as instructed and the athlete does not miss a workout they will see very noticeable results. If they do not notice results then they are most definitely not followed the program as described.

What I also like is the diagrams of the exercises. They are not just shown in a single format they show how the actual movement takes place.

For just $14.95 there is no way you can go wrong. Think of how much it would cost to hire a trainer for this info and for 21-days. Much more than $14.95, plus you have it with you at all times.

Most definitely a buy for someone looking to change their game who also do not wish to spend a ton of money.

Late getting in shape for the season? Here's your solution!
By Ken Krause
Marc Dagenais is a well-known expert on fitness for fastpitch softball, and with this book he once again demonstrates why. While he acknowledges in the beginning that the best approach is to maintain fitness year-round, he also is realistic enough to admit not everyone will do that. For players who suddenly realize they need to get in game shape and don't have a lot of time to accomplish it, this book offers a great path to fitness. One of the best things is rather than providing a generalized set of exercises, Marc uses his experience to deliver just what a softball player will need. He focuses on power and explosiveness, two key factors for success. Another good thing about the program is you don't need a lot of expensive or hard-to-access equipment. The program is designed to let players work out at their own convenience, mostly with things they already own (or can improvise around). For example, one of the workouts calls for four cones, but four of any object will work just as well. If you have three weeks to get ready for the season and want to be sure you show up ready to play, you'll want to buy this book. It's also great for coaches who need to get an entire team in shape, by the way!

has put together a great reference for any coach at ALL level's of play ...
By Jerry
First how can you go wrong on $14.95. Marc, has put together a great reference for any coach at ALL level's of play to include giving parent's the most updated and how to book on "Doing It right." Marc, is known world wide for his expertise in health and conditioning, and I must say especially in Softball. As a coach I don't have time to read a lot of detail "Stuff." information. I want to get to the bottom line so I can work with my players on the details. This book provides me this and more. If you just try the work out and be dedicated to it 100% and it does accomplish the results the price of the book is worth more to me then what I paid for it. I think coach's and parent's need to use the publication as a quick means showing them the "How to method" of getting ready for the season. I've known to many players that wait tell the last minute to get in playing shape, and we know you just can't do that. This book will help you do just that if it's applied. I would recommend this book to everyone. IT WORKS.!!

Midnight: A Gangster Love Story (The Midnight Series), by Sister Souljah

Sister Souljah, the hip-hop generation's number one author and most compelling storyteller, delivers a powerful story about love and loyalty, strength and family. In her bestselling novel, The Coldest Winter Ever, Sister Souljah introduced the world to Midnight, a brave but humble lieutenant to a prominent underworld businessman. Now, in a highly anticipated follow-up to her million-selling masterpiece, she brings readers into the life and dangerously close to the heart of this silent, fearless young man.

Raised in a wealthy, influential, Islamic African family, Midnight enjoys a life of comfort, confidence, and protection. Midnight's father provides him with a veil of privilege and deep, devoted love, but he never hides the truth about the fierce challenges of the world outside of his estate. So when Midnight's father's empire is attacked, he sends Midnight with his mother to the United States.

In the streets of Brooklyn, a young Midnight uses his Islamic mind-set and African intelligence to protect the ones he loves, build a business, reclaim his wealth and status, and remain true to his beliefs.

Midnight, a handsome and passionate young man, attracts many women. How he interacts and deals with them is a unique adventure. This is a highly sensual and tremendous love story about what a man is willing to risk and give to the women he loves most. Midnight will remain in your mind and beat in your heart for a lifetime.

Her "raw and true voice" (Publishers Weekly) will both soothe and arouse you. In a beautifully written and masterfully woven story, Sister Souljah has given us Midnight, and solidified her presence as the mother of all contemporary urban literature.

From Publishers Weekly
Souljah's follow-up to her bestselling novel, TheColdest Winter Ever, is another gritty coming-of-age tale, picking up the story of Midnight (a character in Coldest Winter) as he tries desperately to navigate American culture, Brooklyn streets and the dicey business of growing up. The novel begins as seven-year-old Midnight and his pregnant mother, Umma, are forced to leave their privileged life in Sudan for a hardscrabble American existence. Midnight spends his formative years in Brooklyn guiding and translating for his loyal, loving and talented mother, helping her get a factory job while encouraging her to start a clothing line. Eventually, Midnight starts working at a Chinatown fish shop, finds love, joins a dangerous hustler's basketball league and tries to disentangle his ambivalent feelings toward romance, family and personal honor. Souljah's sensitive treatment of her protagonist is honest and affecting, with some realistic moments of crisis. Unfortunately, a slack plot and slow pacing cause serious bloat, and Souljah's distinctive prose is woefully unpolished. Frustrations aside, Souljah has obvious talent and sincere motives, making her a street-lit sophomore worth watching. (Oct.)

Word to Life

I am not who you think I am. If you love me, you love me for the wrong reasons.

Females tell me they love me because I'm tall. They love when I stand over them and look down. They love when I lay them down and my height and body weight dominates them.

Females tell me they love me because I'm pure black. They say they never seen a black man so masculine, so pretty, so beautiful before.

Females say they love my eyes. They're jet black too. Women claim they find a passion in them so forceful that they'll do anything I say.

Females tell me they love my body. They beg me for a hug even when there's nothing between me and them. They want to be captured in my embrace, and press their breasts against my chest.

Some females ask if they can just touch me. Some tremble when my hands touch them. They say they love the muscles in my arms. They surrender when I lift them up. They whine and moan in rapture. Some cry their pleasure. Some shake. Some pee.

Some of 'em even say they love the way my teeth look in my mouth and how my feet look in my kicks.

Females tell me they love the way I walk, like I'm soon to own the world.

Most females say they love that I'm quiet. Then shiver when I finally talk.

All of the women show me that they love my guns, the fact that I walk with two of them at times. Even the ones who get scared fall in love with their fear of me. Then they come at me even harder.

Some females say I'm too serious, then shield their eyes to hide their feelings from the shine when I finally smile.

I can't lie, I enjoy the good times that some of these women offer me. But I don't take them to heart. I know that they don't really even know me. All the shit that they are in love with is just my style and my looks, all window dressing.

I know that a man is his own beliefs, his own ideas and actions. If you knew me, you would know what I believe. If you knew what I believe, then you would understand how I think. You would understand my ideas and actions. Only then should you decide. Either you believe what I believe, or you admire what I believe and want to get with those beliefs. If not, in the long run, we got nothing in common. I can't take you seriously. I gotta go. You got nothing that makes me want to stay.

I don't come from where you come from. I don't think like you do. My whole situation is different. I come from a country of real men who take real life, real serious.

I wouldn't trade places with an American-born man for any amount of cash.

Where I'm from, a son has a first name and three last names. The three last names are the names of his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Any male who cannot identify his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather is already lost.

These three names are what makes a boy who he is. There is no talk of role models and celebrities. A son is raised under his father's wing, with a grandfather to guide and a great-grandfather as a blueprint, plus an army of uncles nearby.

Where I'm from, a man does not bow to any other man. A man bows down only to Allah. Only Allah created the heavens, the galaxies, the universe, and all of the millions of creatures within.

My father had three wives. Not one wife, one wifey, and a bunch of random bitches on the side.

Where I am from, a man wants to marry a woman and establish a strong family. A man can have more than one wife as long as he can treat them all fairly and provide them with love, separate homes, food, guidance, and presence.

There is no such thing as domestic drama. A woman feels fortunate to be selected by a quality husband, a family man, who will be by her side for her entire lifetime. Families are permanent.

When a man is ready to build his family, he selects a woman who he likes, who is from a family who raised her right, a woman who knows how to love and live. She has to be good for him, his beliefs, and plans for life. Someone who brings him peace, progress, and pleasure. Then he is down for her for real.

She is down for him too because she feels his strength, craves his love and attention, feels safe tucked at his side, and is confident that every day he is making the right moves for her, his family, and himself.

Our women don't argue with their man. A man knows what he is supposed to do and not do. It is the same thing he watched his own father do and not do. So he does it. Even if a man selects the wrong path, his punishment is between himself and Allah. His woman cannot punish him, judge him, or nag him to death.

In my country, a wife is not a whore or ex-whore. Every move a woman makes matters. She can bring dishonor to her man and family even with a simple glance at another man, if it is held for too long.

Even where I am from, there are whores. They know their place too. They stay within the walls of the illegal whorehouse, never to be glorified, honored, claimed, or married. A whore, where I am from, is the opposite of arrogant. She is used but never celebrated by decent men or women. She knows that she can never enjoy the lifestyle and contentment of a respected sister, daughter, mother, or wife.

The punishment for a good woman who comes from a good family and suddenly behaves whorish is severe. She will be isolated by her parents, family, and friends. Her father and mother may lock her away and confine her to one room in the house. In some cases, she is even murdered by her own husband, father, or brother for bringing shame and dishonor to her family and the people who raised, guided, loved, and provided for her.

The family member who commits the murder is not arrested. The whole country acknowledges that a woman is sacred. Every move she makes is either building her family up or breaking it down. Every thought she has is felt and considered by her children. Every word she speaks either teaches or misleads. She must remain honorable, pure, and righteous, otherwise there will be no happiness, no family, and no reason to exist.

Mouthing off; fucking her man's friends, brothers, and cousins; running away with the children; aborting the babies; lying about who is the father of her children; not knowing who the father is; yelling and disrespecting; doing drugs; drinking; parading around mostly naked; acting crazy; our men don't stand for that. We have not experienced that. We never will.

Our women know their place. They stay in it and live and thrive there. They remain there happily. Our women give love and are loved even more. She is respected, protected, and provided for. She lives proud and at peace.

Where I am from, liquor is illegal and forbidden. We believe that it makes a man behave with ignorance. After drinking liquor, the next step, we believe, is to disgrace God, and destroy yourself and your family.

In my country, homosexuality is nonexistent. For the absolute majority it is unknown and undone. There have been one or two of those who have traveled out to other places in Europe or America and come back with this bizarre behavior. However, they could never remain with us. Their homosexuality resulted in suicides, or they just turned up missing.

There are no tears for the man who enters into the exit, and builds a life where there can be no balance, reproduction, or family.

Where I am from, adultery is a crime for a man or a woman. Even to fuck someone else's sister or daughter just because you feel like it or like the way she looks, without approaching her family for marriage, means that you have brought about a battle between dishonored families, yours and hers. The man who commits adultery will be punished by his family. The woman who commits adultery will be considered ruined.

Where I am from, men work. Whether he works his own land and is paid in the foods the Earth produces; whether he works someone else's land; whether he is paid in cash, cattle, or otherwise; he works. Hard work is a man's way of providing for and demonstrating that he loves his family.

Each man must have a business of products or services. His product might be fish, meats, vegetables, fruits, jewelry, clothing, crafts, furniture, vehicles, parts and supplies, or other items. Or he may provide services as a doctor, carpenter, construction worker, engineer, lawyer, driver, educator, or performer. But no man can sit doing nothing. His family, backed up by the entire community, would never allow it.

When I talk about where I am from, which is almost never, both males and females feel uneasy. Some look at me in disbelief, like I'm a fucking liar. Others stare off in complete boredom, like it is not a life they would ever want to live. But I feel fine. People where I am from are happy, while almost everybody I know in America feels fucked up, empty, and dissatisfied, especially the Black people.

At fourteen years young, I became a citizen of the United States. It was supposed to be a great day, to be remembered for a lifetime. There we were, becoming a part of what is known as the best country in the world, America, after having been born and living inside of what Americans consider the worse place in the world, the continent of Africa.

We got dressed up and took the A train to City Hall in New York City. We recited some things that we had already memorized. Then it became official.

I should say it became legal. I was an American on paper. I never became one in my heart or mind.

The year I became an American was the same year I got locked up. I went from the projects, to juvenile detention, to prison. Each year I became more and more familiar with the American Blacks. The ones who look just like me. They range from very light skin to my rich dark color, as it is back home. When I first arrived, they were Afro-Americans, then Blacks, then African Americans, and eventually niggas.

They talked like they were the most powerful, clever motherfuckers on the planet. They looked down on other Blacks arriving from any other country in the world. They hated every accent besides their own. They was quick to ...

Don't waste your time or money on this book.
By Renise Paraison
Yes, I hated this book. I find it really hard the believe that this book and The Coldest Winter Ever were written by the same author, maybe the rumor is true that TCWE was ghost written. The book seemed like it was written by an amateur author. There was no feeling in the writing, just "..she said" and "…she asked" and …"he responded." There was no also no climax. The unnecessary detail was excruciating to read. Vocabulary was completely lacking and any semblance of talent in writing was absent. This book literally could have been so much shorter without the scrupulous and obvious explanations. Speaking of explanations, not once was it mentioned why Midnight moved to New York and what happened to his father who was supposedly a scientist and a political advisor and a businessman. Midnight is sexist and blasts all African Americans and Americans and just obsessed his little Japanese princess. I think it's intriguing to have an inter-cultural relationship but *spoiler* she doesn't speak English so how could you (Midnight) judge every other being in New York based on what they say when you can't even verbally communicate with your partner. This book was just too unrealistic to bear. I really regret buying this and Midnight and the Meaning of Love. I'm not even going to touch the latter, I think it's like 600 pages too and I heard it's just as bad at this one. SKIP!

Can we talk? Let me ask you a few questions about plot consistency. Since you speak so harshly about females, I've got to hold you to a high standard. "Seven continents, seven geniuses"... there's an art's program in Antarctica? I didn't know that.
Akemi!! -- I know she's Asian, but how did her hair grow back so fast? Or, did you forget the part where you said she sliced it off????

Did you really need to title a chapter Bus Stop. That's just wrong. I'm all for sex education and marriage but you were brutal :(

Bangs was one of my favorite characters, even though she behaved childishly, she broke through Midnight's wall, so I like that.

I do like the book, mostly because the voice is authentic. Midnight's masculinity, and vibe was very real.

I'm waiting to read the third book. I can't wait.

God (meaning Jesus--you also seem to have a problem with Christians) Bless.

Astrophysical Techniques, Sixth Edition, by C.R. Kitchin

Long used in undergraduate and introductory graduate courses, Astrophysical Techniques, Sixth Edition provides a comprehensive account of the instruments, detectors, and techniques employed in astronomy and astrophysics. Emphasizing the underlying unity of all astronomical observations, this popular text provides a coherent state-of-the-art account of the instruments and techniques used in current astronomy and astrophysics.

As in earlier editions, the author aims to reduce the trend towards fragmentation of astronomical studies. The underlying unity of all of astronomical observation is emphasized by the layout of the book: the pattern of detection → imaging → ancillary techniques has been adopted so that one stage of an observation is encountered together with the similar stages required for all other information carriers.

The book is written in a very accessible manner, and most of the mathematics is accessible to those who have attended a mathematics course in their final years at school. Nevertheless, the treatment of the topics in general is at a sufficiently high level to be of use to those professionals seeking technical information in areas of astronomy with which they might not be completely familiar.

Review

"Astrophysical Techniques is well established as a standard reference covering the principles and practice of instrumentation and detectors at what might be called advanced introductory level. … suitable as the basis for a first-year undergraduate course, or as a comprehensive reference for the advanced amateur. … good value … The book’s longevity testifies to how well it fills what would otherwise be a conspicuously large hole in the market, and it can continue to be warmly recommended as a comprehensive introduction to the wide diversity of astronomical instrumentation."

You have to be into the paranormal to enjoy such a book but it was very interesting. Has to be something to it if all of these authors of EVP and mediums that talk to ghosts and spirits say basically the same thing.

The Real Thing
By PJEF
John Gruber's book is full of information. You KNOW he knows what he's talking about. The one criticism I have is the lack of proofreading and editing that sometimes is distracting. But Mr. Gruber is obviously sincere, intelligent, and extremely knowledgeable about his subject.
I would recommend this book to researchers of all levels. Even the mildly curious will enjoy this. It covers many bases, including software, devices, methods.
Hopefully he will continue to publish.

Hitler's First Victims: The Quest for Justice, by Timothy W. Ryback

The remarkable story of Josef Hartinger, the German prosecutor who risked everything to bring to justice the first killers of the Holocaust and whose efforts would play a key role in the Nuremberg tribunal.

Before Germany was engulfed by Nazi dictatorship, it was a constitutional republic. And just before Dachau Concentration Camp became a site of Nazi genocide, it was a state detention center for political prisoners, subject to police authority and due process. The camp began its irrevocable transformation from one to the other following the execution of four Jewish detainees in the spring of 1933. Timothy W. Ryback’s gripping and poignant historical narrative focuses on those first victims of the Holocaust and the investigation that followed, as Hartinger sought to expose these earliest cases of state-condoned atrocity.

In documenting the circumstances surrounding these first murders and Hartinger’s unrelenting pursuit of the SS perpetrators, Ryback indelibly evokes a society on the brink—one in which civil liberties are sacrificed to national security, in which citizens increasingly turn a blind eye to injustice, in which the bedrock of judicial accountability chillingly dissolves into the martial caprice of the Third Reich.

We see Hartinger, holding on to his unassailable sense of justice, doggedly resisting the rising dominance of Nazism. His efforts were only a temporary roadblock to the Nazis, but Ryback makes clear that Hartinger struck a lasting blow for justice. The forensic evidence and testimony gathered by Hartinger provided crucial evidence in the postwar trials.

Hitler’s First Victims exposes the chaos and fragility of the Nazis’ early grip on power and dramatically suggests how different history could have been had other Germans followed Hartinger’s example of personal courage in that time of collective human failure.

Review
“Mr. Ryback’s important book shows how even such a small, stubborn, apparently futile determination to adhere to the rule of law can, with fortune on its side, help see final justice done. It is fitting acknowledgment of a forgotten German or (as Hartinger might have preferred) Bavarian hero.”
—The Wall Street Journal

“Fascinating…Has all the makings of a legal thriller.”
—The Boston Globe

“Fascinating, disturbing…Ryback’s book is a decades-overdue recognition.”
—Jewish Times

“Ryback…here examines an early but enormously significant episode in the evolution of the Nazi program of genocide….An important addition to Holocaust collections.”
—Booklist

“A chilling, lawyerly study with laserlike focus.”
—Kirkus

“In recountingthe compellingstory of a prosecutor who sought to bring to justice the perpetrators of crimes at Dachau in the early days of the Nazis’ reign, Timothy Ryback’s book is all the more startling and important for bringing to life an episode so little known. It suggests what might have been if more Germansat the timehad done their professional duty with equal moral compass.”
—Raymond Bonner, author,Anatomy of Injustice

“This is an extraordinary, gripping, and edifying story told extraordinarily well by Timothy Ryback.I read it with a sense of amazement at the capacity of one good man to stand tall in the face of evil, and at the capacity of others to fall into unspeakable barbarism.”
—Richard Bernstein, author, Dictatorship of Virtue

“In this finely researched and deeply disturbing account of how Jews and Communists murdered in Dachau in 1933 became ‘Hitler’s first victims,’ Timothy W. Ryback finds a rare point of light in the courage of an obscure Bavarian prosecutor who tried to fight the escalating Nazi savagery with the rule of law. Thanks to his documented record of the atrocities taking place at Dachau, Ryback can now demonstrate how, within weeks of coming to power, the Nazis had already set off along the dark path that would lead to genocide.”
—Alan Riding, author, And the Show Went On: Cultural Life in Nazi-Occupied Paris.

“Timothy Ryback’s Hitler’s First Victims is a significant addition to the Holocaust canon. The story of the first four Jews murdered at Dachau, as well as the astonishing account of the German prosecutor (surely a precursor of Claus von Stauffenberg) who, in 1933, attempted to charge the vicious Nazi concentration camp commandant with murder, form the heart and soul of Ryback’s amazing book. The author’s research is prodigious and his accumulation of new details make the reader feel as if he is observing the first spreading of the Nazi plague through a microscope. This is history come alive in your hands.”
—Robert Littell, author, The Amateur

“In this horrifying and heartbreaking account of Dachau's early days, Timothy Ryback restores, to the murderers and the murdered alike, something crucially, necessarily missing from most Holocaust histories: their individuality. Then, by capturing, meticulously and understatedly, the retail barbarity of the place, he helps anticipate the wholesale annihilation to follow. And by recounting the striking heroism of two men—a local prosecutor and a medical examiner, simply trying to do their jobs—he allows us at least to ponder whether, had more such good Germans come forward, it all might just have been stopped.”
—David Margolick, author, Beyond Glory: Joe Louis vs. Max Schmeling, and a World on the Brink

“Timothy W. Ryback’s gripping account of one man’s fight against Nazi atrocities holds important lessons for us. Experience demonstrates that the authors of genocide and crimes against humanity frequently test the waters before fully implementing their murderous plans. The Holocaust was no exception. Ryback shows how this genocidal act may have been averted had more people acted with vigilance and determination. Our challenge today is to act on Ryback’s historical insights before new rounds of mass atrocities unfold.”
—Kenneth Roth, executive director, Human Rights Watch

Crimes of the Spring

Thursday morning of Easter Week 1933, April 13, saw clearing skies that held much promise for the upcoming holiday weekend. Mild temperatures were foreseen for Bavaria as they were throughout southern Germany, with a few rain showers predicted for Friday, but brilliant, sunny skies for the Easter weekend. Previous generations hailed such days as Kaiserwetter, weather fit for a kaiser, a playful gibe at the former monarch’s father, who appeared en plein air only when sufficient sunlight permitted his presence to be recorded by photographers. In the spring of 1933, some now spoke in higher-spirited and more reverential tones of Fhrerwetter. It was Adolf Hitler’s first spring as chancellor.

Shortly after nine o’clock that morning, Josef Hartinger was in his second-floor office at Prielmayrstrasse 5, just off Karlsplatz in central Munich, when he received a call informing him that four men had been shot in a failed escape attempt from a recently erected detention facility for political prisoners in the moorlands near the town of Dachau. As deputy prosecutor for one of Bavaria’s largest jurisdictions—Munich II—Hartinger was responsible for investigating potential crimes in a sprawling sweep of countryside outside Munich’s urban periphery. “My responsibilities included, along with the district courts in Garmisch and Dachau, all juvenile and major financial criminal matters for the entire jurisdiction, as well as all the so-called political crimes. Thus, for the Dachau camp, I had dual responsibilities,” he later wrote.

Deputy Prosecutor Hartinger was a model Bavarian civil servant. He was conservative in his faith and politics, a devout Roman Catholic and a registered member of the Bavarian People’s Party, the centrist “people’s party” of the Free State of Bavaria, founded by Dr. Heinrich Held, a fellow jurist and a fierce advocate of Bavarian autonomy. In April 1933, Hartinger was thirty-nine years old and belonged to the first generation of state prosecutors trained in the processes and values of a democratic republic. He pursued communists and National Socialists with equal vigor, and since Hitler’s appointment as chancellor had watched the ensuing chaos and abuses with the confidence that such a government could not long endure. The Reich president, Paul von Hindenburg, had dismissed four chancellors in the past ten months: Heinrich Brning in May, Franz von Papen in November, and Kurt von Schleicher just that past January. There was nothing preventing Hindenburg from doing the same with his latest chancellor Adolf Hitler.

Until then, Hartinger’s daily commerce in crime involved burned barns, a petty larceny, an occasional assault, and, based on the remnant entries in the departmental case register, all too frequent incidents of adult transgressions against minors. Forty-one- year-old Max Lackner, for example, was institutionalized for two years for “sexual abuse of children under fourteen.” Ilya Malic, a salesman from Yugoslavia, was arrested after he “forced a fourteen- year-old to French-kiss.” Hartinger spoke discreetly of “juvenile matters.” Homicides were rare. The only registered murder for those years was a crime of passion committed by forty-seven-year-old Alfons Graf, who put four bullets into the head of his companion, Frau Reitinger, when he discovered her in the back of his company car with another man.

But that year, following Hitler’s January appointment as chancellor and the dramatic arson attack a month later that saw the stately Berlin Reichstag consumed in a nightmare conflagration of crashing glass, twisted steel, and surging flames, the jurisdiction was swept by an unprecedented wave of arrests in the name of national security. In Untergrnberg, the farmer Franz Sales Mendler was arrested for making disparaging remarks about the new government. Maria Strohle, the wife of a power plant owner in Hergensweiler, told a neighbor that she heard Hitler had paid 50,000 reichsmarks to stage the arson attack on the Reichstag; she was sentenced to three months in prison, as was Franz Schliersmaier in Bsenreutin, who put the amount at 500,000. One Bavarian was indicted for comparing Hitler to Stalin, and another for calling him a homosexual, and still another for suggesting he did not “look” German. “Hitler is a foreigner who smuggled himself into the country,” Julie Kolmeder said at a Munich beer garden a few streets from Hartinger’s office. “Just look at his face.” A Munich coachman crossed the law with the indelicate aside, “Hitler kann mich im Arsch lecken.” Euphemistically: Hitler can kiss my ass. More than one person was prosecuted for calling a Nazi a “Bazi.”1 Thousands of others were taken into Schutzhaft, or protective custody, for no apparent reason at all.

The shooting of four men in a failed escape from the Dachau Concentration Camp must have struck Hartinger’s Roman Catholic sensibilities as particularly unfortunate, coming as it did just two days before Good Friday and amid an appeal by the archbishop of Munich and Freising for an Easter amnesty. “In the name of, and on behalf of, the Bavarian bishops, I have the honor, Your Excellency, to extend the following request,” the stately and imperious Cardinal Faulhaber had written Bavaria’s Reich governor on April 3, “that the investigation procedure for those in protective custody be expedited as quickly as possible in order to relieve the detainees and their families from emotional torment.” Faulhaber expressed the desire that the detainees could be home in time for the Easter weekend, reminding the governor that there was no occasion more sacred to Christians than the Eastertide. “If because of time constraints the investigations cannot be completed by Good Fri day,” Faulhaber proposed, “then perhaps out of pure Christian and humanitarian grounds, an Easter amnesty can be granted from Good Friday until the end of Easter.” The cardinal reminded the governor that in December 1914 Pope Benedict XV had invoked a Christmas armistice that stilled weapons on both sides of the front. What worked in a time of war must certainly work in peacetime, was the suggestion. Indeed, the previous month Chancellor Hitler himself had stated that his “greatest ambition” was to “bring back to the nation the millions who had been misled, rather than to destroy them.” What better way to instill a sense of national loyalty than through a gesture of Christian clemency on the holiday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ? In this deeply Catholic corner of the country, when the archbishop of Munich and Freising, the oldest and most powerful of the state’s bishoprics, spoke, the vast majority of Bavaria’s four million Catholics listened, and on this occasion so did its political leadership.

A week later, the state interior minister, Gauleiter Adolf Wagner, responded on the Reich governor’s behalf.2 “Most Honorable Herr Cardinal, I have the honor of responding to your letter to the governor of April 3, 1933,” he wrote, “to inform Your Eminence that we are in the process of reviewing the cases of everyone currently in detention, and that by Easter more than a thousand individuals will be released from protective custody.” Wagner conveyed additional good news. The state government would permit Easter Mass to be celebrated among those practicing Roman Catholics who remained in detention as long as it did not constitute “a burden to the state budget.” Wagner recommended that “the responsible religious authorities should be directly in contact with the administration of the individual detention camps, whom I will provide corresponding instructions as to how to deal with this matter.”

But now, amid heartening news of the Easter amnesty, came news of the deaths at Dachau. The call to Hartinger that Thursday morning was conducted in conformity with Paragraph 159 of the Strafprozessordnung, or Criminal Procedure Code, which required police officers “to report immediately to the prosecutor or local magistrate” any case in which “a person has died from causes other than natural ones.” Paragraph 160, in turn, obligated Hartinger to take immediate action: “As soon as the prosecutor is informed of a suspected criminal act, either through a report or by other means, he is to investigate the matter until he has determined whether an indictment is to be issued.” In compliance with his Paragraph 160 responsibilities, Hartinger called Dr. Moritz Flamm, the Munich II medical examiner, who was responsible for conducting postmor tem examinations and autopsies in criminal investigations.

Hartinger liked Dr. Flamm. Both men had previously worked in Munich I, Hartinger as an assistant prosecutor and Flamm as a parttime assistant medical examiner. Like Hartinger, he was a man of keen intelligence who had earned perfect grades in school. And like Hartinger, Flamm was a man of sterling professionalism. Flamm autopsies were models of precision and efficiency— not a moment wasted, not a detail overlooked. Often thirty pages in length, they could withstand the most rigorous scrutiny in a court of law. Flamm was particularly proficient in bullet wounds. He had completed his medical training at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich in July 1914, just in time to join the 2nd Bavarian Infantry Regiment. He was dispatched to the front in August 1916 with the 3rd Medical Company, where he served meritoriously, earning an Iron Cross, the Bavarian Military Order, and the Friedrich August Cross. “Particularly noteworthy is his absolute reliability and his medical professionalism that make him, without question, suited for any type of service,” the company surgeon had commented after the war. “At the front [Flamm] became virtually indispensable as the situation with medical sup- plies deteriorated,” he wrote, “all the while demonstrating a seemingly inexhaustible dedication to his work.” The surgeon observed that Flamm was notably “modest” and “by nature rather sensitive,” but possessed of intelligence, sound judgment, and humor even “in the most desperate situations.” The surgeon said he had come to know in Flamm a physician “for whom one can only wish full and well-deserved recognition and in good conscience can provide unqualified praise.” Flamm’s handwriting, precise and refined, with playful, elegant flourishes, reflects his calm and easy competence.

Flamm also demonstrated a fierce independence and willing- ness to act on his conscience when circumstances demanded. In the spring of 1919, amid a failed Bolshevik coup that saw thousands taken into protective custody—with and without cause—he exercised his authority as chief physician of a military hospital to order the release of two patients who were being detained on suspicion of collaborating with communists. Flamm was accused of Bolshevik sympathies, but was taken into “personal protection” by his superior, who vouched for him “administratively, professionally, and politically” and insisted that he was a man free of “any personal, moral, or political blemish.” After two years with Flamm in Munich II, Hartinger had come to share the same high regard. In addition, Flamm had a driver’s license and his own motorcar.

1. The word Bazi can be translated as “swindler” or “scoundrel,” and derives from the Bavarian dialect, as does the word Nazi, a shortening of the word Nationalsozialist, but also an old nickname for Ignatius, a popular Bavarian name commonly associated with a country bumpkin, and applied disparagingly to Hitler followers. A Nazi never called another Nazi a “Nazi.” They referred to each other as National Socialists or “party comrades.
2. The Gauleiter, or district leader, was the Nazi Party official responsible for local affairs. These Nazi Party districts corresponded to the thirtythree voting districts for the Reichstag elections. In 1941, the number of Gauleiter and corresponding districts was increased to fortythree.

Josef Hartinger - a name to remember
By AmazonFan
"All that it takes for evil to triumph is that good men do nothing." This Edmund Burke quote is often used when it comes to the horrors of the Holocaust. With 20/20 hindsight, the world wonders how such atrocities could have been allowed to happen. In Timothy Ryback's book Hitler's First Victims, we learn that at least one good man - Munich prosecutor Josef Hartinger - did indeed "do something" as he attempted to investigate the increasing number of suspicious deaths of prisoners at Dachau at the hands of the concentration camp guards.

The book covers the years 1933-34 when Hartinger, at great risk to himself and his career, categorized these deaths as murders and set out to bring the perpetrators to justice. But Hitler's political machine, while still in its infancy, wielded considerable force and the prison camp guards were never indicted.

But Hartinger's work was not in vain. He steadfastly insisted that each death be investigated and an autopsy performed by Dr. Moritz Flamm, a medical examiner trusted to keep meticulous records. Along with Hartinger's notes and interviews with witnesses, these records, after collecting dust for many years, were used in the Nuremburg Trials and are what gave the world an inside look at Hitler's sordid reign of terror.

Ryback is a prolific writer, giving a name, a face, indeed a life to these early victims. Meticulously researched, Hitler's First Victims is a compelling - albeit horrifying - read about a slice of history that was ultimately overshadowed by events to come. But it is a crucial missing piece to the ongoing "how could this have happened?" puzzle.

I did not know the name Josef Hartinger before reading this book, but with gratitude to Timothy Ryback, it is one I will never forget.

Riveting. A lesson from History we Should Learn and Remember
By Lita Perna
Hitler's First Victims, a tight dense book with 31 pages of notes and an appendix, shines a spotlight on Dachau's beginnings, the first murders that occurred here, and the Munich prosecutor Josef Hartinger, who tries to bring the murders to justice. The descriptions of the murders are gut wrenching and brutal, but are necessary to understand the genesis (No pun intended) of what followed. The author believes that the "trail of blood that began on Dachau led ultimately to and seemingly inexorably to Auschwitz."

Timothy W. Ryback captures the texture of the times; what some saw as "the seeds of dictatorship and the slow and insidious Nazi rise to absolute power.

In the fragile beginning of the National Socialists we learn that Hitler publically denounces storm troopers and calls for them to cease and desist on their attacks.
We see how Himmler; who would go on to be one of the people most directly responsible for the Holocaust, initially rises to the Jew's defense. "For us, the citizen of the Jewish faith is as much a citizen as those not of the Jewish faith and his life ad his property are equally protected."

The subject of the book, local Munich Prosecutor Josef Hartinger, has struggled to achieve his current situation. He is well situated with a good marriage, three months short of his fortieth birthday, with a five year old daughter and he looks forward to a bright future. He has everything to lose. But he risks it all...even his life, and he goes ahead with indictments against the Dachau murderers, with only a brave doctor... who also risks his life, on his side.

Hartinger says, "Just because one is without power does not mean one needs to be without courage and ultimately without character. Shouldn't one try to find some way to make a difference, even in such hopeless circumstances, without necessarily jeopardizing one's life?"

There's an incident in the book that plays like a scene from a Hollywood film when an SS guard halts Hartinger at the entrance to Dachau with the threat, "We will shoot you." Hartinger responds, "Then you'll have to shoot me. I'm coming in."

The author leaves no dangling threads. He follows each character in the book all the way to the end. We know what happens to every one of them. This adds both to frustration and satisfaction.

Ryback says at the end of the book that he wants to demonstrate that if Germany "had found more individuals like Hartinger, perhaps history could have been set on a different, less horrific path."

This book may wear you out, fill you up and make you think. It is a very important book.

Outstanding & Horrifying History about the formation of Dachau and Hitler's first victims
By The Gabster
This history of the creation (I use this word as in the creation of a monster) of Dachau and the first victims of the Nazi's murderous rampage that lasted from 1933 until the end of WWII in 1945 is both brilliant and horrifying. Timothy W. Ryback's meticulously researched and written history relies upon the writings and story of German prosecutor Josef Hartinger and forensic medical examiner Dr. Moritz Flamm who both risked their lives by defying the Nazi authorities in Munich by contradicting the "official" reports of the deaths of political prisoners in the regimes first concentration camp. In addition, testimony from the Nuremberg War Crimes Trials, held by the allies after WWII brought much of the quashed facts to light. The history is dedicated to the first four victims who were savagely murdered after being brutalized and tortured on April 12, 1933. Their names are Rudolf Benario, age 24; Ernst Goldmann, Age 24; Arthur Kahn, age 21; Edwin Kahn, age 32. They were ostensibly political detainees, never charged, tried or convicted of any crimes, who were rounded up and murdered. They were the first, and as history has clearly demonstrated, they were far from the last.

Dachau was a 20-minute drive north of Munich. Interestingly, the town's name derives from the words for "mud" and "meadow." The makeshift detention facility was constructed on the grounds of the defunct Royal Powder and Munitions Factory, accessible to the Dachau Train Station. Thus began the era of brutalization. The Nazi's relied upon an "unprecedented application of the law of 'protective custody'" to begin their reign of terror.

Full of bad information
By Thunderweasel
From the first chapter of this book I was appalled. The authors did not take the time to research their facts before writing this book. They missed dates by over a million years. They used examples that had been disproved years before they wrote the book. There was some interesting information in it but, I had no way of trusting anything else in the book after some of the horrifying mistakes in the book. If your instructor is making you buy this then you need to consider his qualifications.

This book explores how the body was investigated in the late nineteenth-century asylum in Britain. As more and more Victorian asylum doctors looked to the bodily fabric to reveal the ‘truth’ of mental disease, a whole host of techniques and technologies were brought to bear upon the patient's body. These practices encompassed the clinical and the pathological, from testing the patient's reflexes to dissecting the brain.

Investigating the Body in the Victorian Asylum takes a unique approach to the topic, conducting a chapter-by-chapter dissection of the body. It considers how asylum doctors viewed and investigated the skin, muscles, bones, brain, and bodily fluids. The book demonstrates the importance of the body in nineteenth-century psychiatry as well as how the asylum functioned as a site of research, and will be of value to historians of psychiatry, the body, and scientific practice.
