About the Author
John K. Halvey is a partner in the New York office of the international law firm of Milbank, Tweed, Hadley, & McCloy, LLP and the founder of the Strategic Sourcing and Technology Group. He practices in all areas of technology and sourcing law, with particular emphasis on information technology and business process outsourcing and private equity transactions involving technology or sourcing companies.
Mr. Halvey has represented companies in many of the largest technology, telecommunications, and business processing outsourcing transactions, including Deutsche Bank, JP Morgan, BellSouth, Panasonic, Citigroup, DuPont, AT&T, Alcatel, Xerox, Boeing, Bombardier, General Atlantic and the Commonwealth Bank of Australia.
His work in these areas has been the subject of articles in Forbes, Information Week, Computer World, CIO Magazine, The Daily Deal, and Venture Capital Journal. Mr. Halvey has for many years been ranked by Chambers and Partners as one of the world’s leading information technology and outsourcing lawyers and was the only lawyer in the United States to be ranked a "Star Performer" in the outsourcing industry in both 2005 and 2006. In 2006 Mr. Halvey received the Chambers Shield of Excellence as the Outsourcing Attorney of the Year and as the HR Outsourcing Attorney of the Year by the HROA.
In 1995 Crain’s named Mr. Halvey on its list of the 40 most successful people under 40 in New York City. He is the coauthor of Information Technology Outsourcing Transactions: Process, Strategies, and Contracts (John Wiley & Sons, 2005).

Barbara M. Melby is a partner in the Global Outsourcing Group at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius, LLP. Ms. Melby’s practice focuses primarily on outsourcing transactions, including information technology and business process outsourcing, as well as other technology-related transactions, including development agreements, system implementation agreements, licensing and hosting agreements, technology services, joint ventures, and strategic alliances.
One of the leading outsourcing attorneys in the United States, Ms. Melby is the coauthor of Information Technology Outsourcing: Process, Strategies, and Contracts (John Wiley & Sons, 2005). She was recently recognized by Chambers USA as one of the nation’s leading lawyers for Business Process Outsourcing.
In addition to her two books, she has written numerous articles in and has been widely quoted in a wide variety of publications, including CIO Magazine, IT World, The Metropolitan Corporate Counsel, and The Pennsylvania Lawyer. Ms. Melby is also a frequent speaker on outsourcing and technology transactions at various business, legal, and professional conferences.

I have an older version of this book (2000) and have referred to it frequently when considering outsourcing, in thinking through partnering potentials, and in considering consultant hires. Halvey & Melby systematically walk you through the things you need to consider including: planning, defining the scope, vendor selection, negotiations, contracting, measuring performance, human resources, projects, international considerations, post and re-negotiation activities, and termination.

BPO 2nd edition review

The book is quite interesting in matter of setting an initial framework for BPO contracts, provisions and so forth. However I do think that it lacks a little in depth in matters of theoretical BPO foundation and/or importance. Every piece of information within the book is not quite up to date, which means it has content from 2005 and backwards, no recent developments ins regard to the topic exist.

Several sentences were awkward or simply didn't make sense, several instances of simple incorrect grammar (your vs you're), and he kept calling the read "my friend or bud". Otherwise, it was interesting.

Well written but expected more

The authors give sterling reasons why the ANC (and its allies) has fallen regardless of the fact that it is still the 'ruling' party in South Africa. The authors cannot be faltered on their eloquence in prose as they link history with the current status and as they make an attempt in predicting the future. They, however, do not present the "What Next", as expected. They instead indicate, and rightfully so, why opposition parties will also not make it; but that doesn't answer the question they posed in the title of the book.

They do though challenge the reader to take charge of their own citizenship. They however understated the need to address past and present racial issues; which cannot be resolved by a rapid forgive-and-forget approach.

This is a well written book which however doesn't really answer the critical question that it poses.

Highly recommended

This is an extremely readable book. I read it in the run up to the South African National General elections in 2014.

It is not only a great insight into how the organisation works, but places its thinking into a historical context which is perhaps less known in general.

It is very well written, unlike so many other books in the genre.

An interesting analysis of the fortunes of Africa's oldest liberation movement. The authors used contemporary African history for a critical look at what is undoubtably the worlds oldest liberation movement. Is it still relevant and can it survive the post democracy dynamics.

The late Julia F. Morton was Research Professor of Biology and Director of the Morton Collectanea at University of Miami, a research and information center devoted to economic botany. She was an internationally recognized authority on economic plants, particularly ornamental, edible, medicinal and toxic species. She was the author of 10 books and co-author of or contributor to 12 others; she wrote 94 scientific papers and co-authored 27 others.

The best fruit book

This excellent book written by the late Dr. Julia Morton is one of the most comprehensive works ever written about tropical fruits. It includes sections on history, fruit cultivation practices including propagation,nutritional studies and cultivars among others. It truly is the "bible" of rare fruit cultivation. Also,hundreds of photographs. My highest recommendation.

This is THE bible of tropical fruit growers, containing information about rare fruit trees--how to propagate, grow, and eat them, and more. I compare it to the Sunset Garden Guide but instead for tropical fruits, but much more detailed. A must have for the rare fruit/tropical fruit person!

This book could be one of the most comprehensive books in the subject of fruits that grow in warm climates. For those involved in agriculture in the tropics, this book is especially helpful because it describes where each fruit comes from, what other common names it might have, what it is related to, how it is used, and sometimes the author discusses how it is grown. Dr. Morton includes information on the history of each crop, its main cultivation requirements, food uses and nutritional value. The sections on ‘culture’ are often further subdivided into ‘planting’, ‘fertilizing’, ‘irrigation’, ‘weed control’ and (in the case of pineapple) ‘flower induction’.

The assembling of the data in this book has been facilitated by the author’s over 45 years of familiarity and experimentation with most of the fruits discussed.

The table of contents lists 128 different fruits which are discussed in the book. Sixty eight of these have a color photo (in the original version of this book).

Some of the fruits have several varities. For example there 26 distinct types of dates.

I was surprised to learn that bananas never need to be replanted (p.29). The banana suckers spring up around the main plant forming a clump or ‘stool’, the eldest sucker replacing the main plant when it fruits and dies, and this process continues indefinitely. Also overly ripe bananas which are rejected by humans can be fed to swine.

Another interesting fruit is the soursop, which is one fruit lending itself well to preserving and processing (p 75). The juice of the soursop is said to be diuretic and a remedy for haematuria and urethritis. Taken when fasting, it is believed to relieve liver ailments and leprosy. Pulverized immature fruits, which are astringent, are decocted as a dysentery remedy (p.80).

The author provides some tips on protecting fruits from pests. For example, jackfruits (p.58-62) may be covered with paper sacks when very young to protect them from pests and diseases. One other research notes that the bags encourage ants to swarm over the fruit and guard it from its enemies.

The author also notes that some fruits, such as the bilimbi (p.129) have no reported pests or diseases.

The author notes that the roots of the papaya (p.346) are claimed to expel roundworms. Also crushed leaves of the papaya wrapped around tough meat will tenderize it overnight. The leaf can also function as a vermifuge and as a primitive soap substitute in laudering. Also studies at the University of Nigeria have revealed that extracts of ripe and unripe papaya leaves and of the seeds are active against gram-negative bacteria.In a London hospital in 1977, a post-operative infection in a kidney-transplant patient was cured by strips of papaya which were laid on the wound and left for 48 hours, after all modern medications had failed.

The author also notes that with some fruits, the seeds can be eaten. Other fruits produce sirup. Other fruit trees can be a great source of timber. Other fruit trees produce leaves which are edible to livestock.

Some fruits have poisonous seeds or poisonous bark. Or the fruits themselves can be toxic if eaten in large quantities. The author notes all of this in her descriptions in the ‘toxicity’ sections of each fruit description.

While every reader will have their own list what better dinner conversation game? this dozen (chosen in conjunction with Friedwald's editor, Bob Gottlieb) should contain at least half of everyone's choices. But this is not a trivia book, and the joy of these short essays ruminative, but also filled with fascinating historical and social details - is in their intelligence and their always evident love of the music itself. Friedwald (Sinatra!; The Good Life, with Tony Bennett) can surprise, as when he lists similarities between Kurt Weill and No‰l Coward (in his discussion of "Mack the Knife") or unearths the connections between Show Boat (which features "Old Man River") and British humorist P.G. Wodehouse. But he is at his best elucidating how a particular song works its magic. His history of Johnny Green's 1930 classic "Body and Soul" introduced by Gertrude Lawrence, made famous by the notorious Libby Holman and become a jazz standard when performed by Coleman Hawkins, Charlie Parker and Oscar Peterson is incisive, with illuminating details (he describes Tony Bennett's hand motions while singing). Friedwald performs similar feats with the other songs, including "As Time Goes By" (in which he praises Tiny Tim's late 1960s rendition), "The Saint Louis Blues," "I Got Rhythm" and "My Funny Valentine." In the end, the book is an important contribution not only to American musicology but also to the literature on popular culture.

More Fine Work From Friedwald

If you're an aficionado of the Great American Songbook, this is a must-buy. If you've read Friedwald's "The Song is You," you should already have this fine follow-up.
"Stardust Melodies" covers the origins and musical structure of some well-chosen standards. On the latter score, don't be intimidated if you don't read music; the analyses cover only a few pages and, frankly, it would be educational to read them while listening to the songs themselves.
Major recordings of the songs are then analyzed in the knowledgeable but witty and accessible style that endears Friedwald to his readers, and no one who has read any of his previous books will be disappointed. Perfect? No: the lack of discographies is a particularly glaring lapse, as noted by several reviewers. And, as others have also noted, Friedwald does have a blind spot when it comes to many more contemporary artists, but at least he wears his prejudices on his sleeve - he bluntly states, for instance, that he refuses to even listen to Johnnie Ray's recording of "As Time Goes By" (which happens to be excellent and, for Ray, quite restrained - WF might even like it!). This doesn't help his overall credibility with some readers, but for others Will's dislikes are part of the fun in reading him.
And that's the bottom line: this is a fun and informative book, not dry, stuffy or academic, reflecting the depth, variety and vitality of American pop. As the man said, Who could ask for anything more?

Insightful, but not for all readers

Stardust Melodies may be a godsend for musicologists, composers and musicians, but if you are a casual fan of jazz or swing this book may be overload. While Friedwald's other works, such as his biography of Sinatra's musical career, are accessible to a wide audience, the author's considerable expertise results in Stardust Melodies being very analytical and for many readers it may amount to a lot of trivia. That said -- I devoured the book and think it is superb in both concept and nearly as good in execution. Sure, everyone has a different list of songs, but I can't argue with Friedwald's selections.
What's missing? By all means, include a CD sampler of some of the older, obscure versions of the songs. While it would obviously be out of the question to reproduce the Sinatra and Fitzgerald tracks (for example), I'm sure that half of a surviving aircheck from Bing Crosby in the 1930s would be no problem and I would bet that almost none of the readers have heard it. Reading about music is sometimes difficult.
However, the historical information (for example, about the evolving lyrics of Ol' Man River, or the obscure origins of Mack the Knife) is treasurable and compensates for the frustration noted above. Opinion is inevitable in a work such as this, but Friedwald's is an educated opinion, and it adds flavor to the text.

Hits and Misses

Will Friedwald probably deserves a medal for taking on this project, a 400-page analysis and performance history of twelve oft-recorded American lullabyes. Even some of us who swear by the Great American Songbook might opt for "I Can't Get No Satisfaction" if the alternative is listening to several hundred different versions of "Stardust" (as lovely as it is). Granted, a song biography has more going for it than, say, a performance history of Shakespeare's most popular plays, but still it's not exactly a compelling page turner.
Friedwald writes with hipness, esprit and engaging good humor, and he delivers provocative opinions, fascinating information, and a wealth of trivia. But the price of admission may be judged a bit excessive by some readers, mainly because the book contains no index, lists, or even discographies that would insure its value as a reference tool.
Every reader will no doubt find much to quibble about with a book such as this (admittedly no small part of its appeal). Frankly, I'm surprised the author makes no mention of the 1947 Lionel Hampton All-Star Concert recording of "Stardust" (with extraordinary solos by Charlie Shavers and Slam Stewart along with Hamp's introduction of the "Pretty Baby" motif, which Friedwald attributes to a later recording). And although a Paul Desmond version is mentioned, the Brubeck Quartet performance on the indispensable "Jazz at Oberlin" album (which evokes without stating the melody) is not. Finally, I'm surprised the author appears to accept "C" (as does Zinsser in his book) as the current standard key for the song. Any real musician I've known has balked at lowering the tune down half a step from the traditional Db, and for good reason: such a simplification drastically alters the character and feel of the piece, making stardust little more than prosaic morning dust.
No doubt no reader will be completely satisfied with the song selections--including this one. How can you possibly leave out as durable, beautiful, ingenious a tune as "All the Things You Are," especially given its many permutations? Which is simply to say that some of us would have preferred shorter chapters, more songs, and an index.

Outstanding in Content, Flow, and Design

Employers and educators-parents, too-are befuddled by the younger generation. So, what's new? We've had that condition for generations. Ah, but this generation is quite different than anything we've encountered in history. Today's young people seem to be wired differently, making them more difficult to understand and work with. This book will lift the fog, increasing your insight, appreciation, and skill to more effectively tap this powerful resource.
The book is divided into three sections. In the first part of the book, Chester explains Generation Why's traits, values, and perspectives-the good, the bad, and the ugly. Readers will gain valuable insights into a generation that will have a tremendous impact on the workplace and on society. This section of the book is well-constructed as a sort of stream of consciousness that will hold your attention as your knowledge expands.
The second section is filled with information and advice for employers. You'll learn about recruiting, training, managing, appearance, fun, recognition and rewards, and retention in bite-size pieces. The design of this book is quite appropriate, as it fits the way your mind must work if you are to be successful in connecting with Gen Why. And that takes us to the third section-ways to connect...and disconnect...with these unique individuals.
Now the fine points. This book delivers useful information, but it also provides interpretation. You learn and you understand after reading each section. The consistent format aids in absorbing the volume of knowledge presented in these pages. Call-outs will help scanning readers grab the high points, but don't be surprised if they pull you into the text looking for more.
Reading a book with this much detail can be overwhelming. In these cases, I find myself wishing there were some kind of a summary or explanatory index at the end of the book. Bullet points would remind me of what I'd read and help me "get" the major concepts without wading through all the text again. Chester has done us all a big favor by presenting such an executive summary, chapter by chapter, at the end of the book. You can actually start at the end of the book to get an overview, then dig into the details.
This book is designed for efficient use, as well as an effective vehicle to deliver a considerable amount of information. There are no guarantees that you'll be totally successful working with Gen Whys after absorbing this book, but you'll be miles ahead of those who haven't read it yet.
Side note: as a consultant and speaker, I address generational issues in my work. Even with my prior knowledge, I gained quite a bit from Chester's work and will confidently recommend it to all my clients who might employ these young people. Come to think of it, that would be all my clients. Employers, teachers, parents, preachers-read this book!

Highly Insightful and Very Entertaining

Books about generational differences tend towards one of two poles: informative but not particularly interesting or interesting but marginally informative. Employing Generation Why is an exception. The author's insights into the real differences between Generation Why and those older is based on years of first-hand experience and research. This is not abstract, academic theory. But Chester does a great job of making his insights engaging and entertaining. His vivd illustrations are memorable, and he clarifies murky subject matter with easy-to-understand charts and graphics. Whether you're an employer who needs help managing a new generation at work, or simply a parent or concerned adult who wants to make more sense of what kids are dealing with today, this is a book well-worth reading.

Good read for first book by this author

Very insightful as to how are thinking influences our life for results or consiquences. This is another New Thought writer I have been wanting to read. Already bought two other books of his to read. These New Thought authors had a way of stating Truths that I can understand. I do have to admitt that at time it does get a little heavy (intellectual), but that has not detered me. Even turned on others to a few of these authors. They have made use of alot of what they write as well.

Great source of inspirational philosophy. Such as "when we understand the laws of thought and think accordingly, we have begun what may properly be termed scientific thinking; that is, we have begun designed thinking; thinking with a purpose in view; thinking in accordance with exact scientific system; and thinking for results". This book contains many passages of this type. Some of these actually provoke your thought process that is what I like most about this book.
