Clear and concise

This is an excellent book on the analysis of algorithms. More specifically, it is a book on the mathematics needed for the analysis of algorithms. Quite a few algorithms are presented and analyzed in great detail, but the emphasis is on the analysis techniques rather than on the algorithms.
This is in contrast with Cormen,Leiserson and Rivest, or Sedgewick's own "Algorithms" series which emphasize the algorithms rather than the analysis.
If you're looking for a catalog of algorithms along with explanations, you want a different book, but if you want to know how to analyze that bizarre code (which Fred in the next cubicle wrote) and prove that it works well (or doesn't) then this is an excellent choice.
The book is aimed at advanced undergrads/graduate students and assumes a certain amount of mathematical sophistication - i.e. calculus, discrete math, probability, etc.
On the spectrum from "Mathematical Techniques" through "Analysis of Algorithms" and ending up with "Catalog of Algorithms", I would start with Graham, Knuth and Patashnik "Concrete Mathematics", travel through this book, on to Knuth "The Art of Computer Programming", then to Cormen, Leiserson and Rivest, and finally end up with either Sedgewick's "Algorithms" or Skeina's "Algorithm Design Manual".

Classic textbook in this field

For a long time analytic combinatorics lacks a good and comprehensive textbook. Almost every learner in this field learns this subject via scattered papers and chapters in different books or journels. The apprearence of this book is so welcome by learners and researchers that it offers a excellent introduction of this powerful and relatively new field. Flajolet and Sedgewick are the famous masters of this field, and this book proves that again. The writing style is succinct, with instant exercise(s) after every important concept and result. The pace of this book is very natural and self-contained. The first half of this book deals with the basic tools used for analysis of algorithm, from the recurrence, generating function, to asymptotic approx. Then it discusses 2 most crucial subjects: trees and permutations. The last 2 chapter turns to strings and words. I found it very readble that there is a typical and core example in every chapter. BTW, since I still haven't finished studying this book, but I must say that Chapter 5 (Asymptotic) is among many textbooks the best introduction to this hard topic so far.

A very readable chapter on generating functions

I don't know whether the style of this book is good or not but for me the chapter on generating functions was very readable. At the time of reading I already have read several books for the understanding of generating functions; including Graham, Knuth, and Patashnik's "Concrete Mathematics," which is definitely great but difficult to me. I've got a solid understanding of the subject through two books: Polya et al's "Notes on Introductory Combinatorics" and Sedgewick and Flajolet's.

About the Author
Nancy created and pioneered the development of The Thinking Environment and is Founder and President of Time To Think. A published author and public speaker, she also teaches Time To Think courses, leads the Time To Think Faculty and delivers keynote presentations around the world.

Five Stars for Nancy Kline's Latest Triumph

If you didn't get everything you wanted this Christmas--or even if you did--I want to suggest something you should give yourself as a new year's gift: more time to think. No, I haven't discovered how to squeeze more than 168 hours into a week, but it's probably the next best thing.

About the Author
Gerardo Canova was born in 1986 and raised in Panama City, Panama. From a very young age he had a passion for the arts and a keen interest in reading a wide range of book genres. He grew up mixing his passion for well written novels with his inherent interest of science fiction, mystery, crime, suspense, and the paranormal. He graduated with a bachelors degree in Graphic Design, and has been working as a freelancer in his graphic design studio EL BLOQUE DESIGN. He always had a dream to write a complete novel since he was 9 years old but never found the time nor the inspiration to complete one until now; The Twisted Life of Nikolai Isayev is his debut novel. A must read novel by impressive author Gerardo Canova

The Twisted Life of Nikolai Isayev, a debut novel by author Gerardo Canova, is an incredible story set in 24th Century Imperial Russia. Canova's writing captures the reader's imagination, and continues to build momentum from the story's beginning until the last page. Even though I am not an avid reader, I found myself not wanting to put this book down! This is the first book that I have read, cover to cover, in my lifetime and in one day! Canova's characters come to life within the pages. I felt myself immersed in his writing, that it was like I was right there with the characters, experiencing everything in person. I truly felt like I had a personal relationship with each character. Each chapter brings more twists and turns, and puts the reader through a psychological, emotional rollercoaster. It won't disappoint, and ends with the reader longing for more from this impressive author.

About the Author

Joy Hakim, a former teacher, editor, and writer won the prestigious James Michener Prize for her series, A History of US, which has sold over 4 million copies nationwide. A graduate of Smith College and Goucher College she spent years teaching students from elementary school up to the college level. She also served as an Associate Editor at Norfolk's Virginian-Pilot, and was an Assistant Editor at McGraw-Hill's World News.

Whitewashing history.

It would be nice if history wasn't whitewashed on top of lots of misinformation. Glorifying Columbus and calling slaves "field workers" was enough to send me searching for a different history curriculum. Do yourself a favor, skip this book.

COULDN'T LIVE IT MORE

FINALLY! Honest history! I love it. It's not biased, it's beautifully written and illustrated, and my son loves it so much he reads at least a chapter a day with no complaints. If you want your children to know the truth about the first US peoples, the different homosepian species that have gone extinct (largely taught ignorantly as our same species -'neanderthal') going back to the Ice Age, that Christopher Columbus was not the first to sail to the US and in fact did so on accident, and so many other awesome fascinating truths that are either left out or skewed for the public system's 'in a box' texts, buy this series. He'll be reading at least 4 of the 10-book series this year.

Don't Pass On This Series

This is the kind of book I would have returned to the book store shelf after a ten second preview. No razzle dazzle.

Don't be fooled. This is a seriously good series. I gave it a try because our homeschool curriculum (Build Your Library) suggested it. I'm so glad! The author uses a story telling, time/space travel approach and it works. My boys are eleven, they like listening to the chapters. I bought the entire series of books, then bought one of the audiobooks. I think we could have gotten along with just the audiobooks, to be honest, and I'm going to download more as we progress through the series. Excellent US history anchor.

Oh, and I also bought the companion study guide thing & the test booklet. After trying to plug in both, I decided to only use the test booklet. It's great for a quick review of previous material, and it includes tests for all of the books in the series.

Jen Hirt is Assistant Professor of Creative Writing and Composition at Penn State Harrisburg. She is the author of the memoir "Under Glass: The Girl with a Thousand Christmas Trees."

Erin Murphy is Professor of English at Penn State Altoona. She is the author of six books of poetry, including "Ancilla" and coeditor (with Todd Davis) of "Making Poems: Forty Poems with Commentary by the Poets," also published by SUNY Press.

I've practiced Arnold Ehret's Mucusless Diet Healing System for 10+ years and have lost 110 lbs and healed multiple ailments, such as sleep apnea, daily migraine headaches, allergies, regular bouts of bronchitis, etc. And I have had the privilege of helping others reach their health goals through a mucus-free lifestyle.

This is a remarkable book, yet I would suggest that it is important to first read Ehret's Mucusless Diet Healing System: Scientific Method of Eating Your Way to Health and Rational Fasting. These two books will give you the foundation you need to take full advantage of The Cause and Cure of Human Illness. It focuses a bit more on scientific analysis and also has a great section of very useful pictures, particularly those of Ehret's transformation from a sick to a healthy man. Timeless Truth

Although this book was written almost 100 years ago, the principles are timeless. What Ehret reveals is so simple and straightforward that it's easy to understand why illness occurs and more importantly, how to avoid it. This book is a good complement to Ehret's Mucusless Diet Healing System where he explains the basis for optimal health through the mucusless diet. I'd recommend both of these books if you're serious about your health!

Anyone serious about health should read all of his books. I have been very surprised at how much mucus my body has been holding over the years and the length of time it is taking to eliminate it.
