Fantastic! Just like the previous book, it had me from the first page. I couldn't put it down!

So far this series has filled the void so many other books left. Sometimes I have a bad habit of making mental notes of what a book lacked, what I wish it had. Then I'd take all of those book wishes and create this vision of what my perfect book would be. Somehow Randi Cooley Wilson picked up on it and delivered that and more in the Revelation series.

Can I just copy and paste the review I wrote for Revelation?!? My opinions of the characters didn't change, I still love them all. So in addition to the points I made in my review for the previous book, I loved the following:
- Timing. I've read quite a few series where the next book picks up months or a year later and you're left wondering what the hell went on during that time. Restraint picked up exactly where Revelation left off. I really loved that. I was able to jump from one book to the next and not have to fill in the gaps on my own.
- Still no love triangle! I have a feeling something is about to spark in the next book, but I'm not really worried. I sort of like Gage, he's growing on me.. but I can't see some epic everlasting love between him and Eve.
- Eve is still one of my favorite protagonists. She's still got a mouth on her, she's so sassy and I LOVE it. I wish she was a bit more sarcastic, but that's just me. She's becoming such a strong character, I can't wait to see her grow into the fierce woman I know she's bound to become.
- The dialogue is real. If this book happened in real life, their reactions are pretty spot on. Sometimes authors lose touch with the real world and they make their characters react weird to certain situations and use phrases that you don't hear a lot these days. No joke, I just read a book that had the protagonist say "Gee whiz!" and it wasn't sarcasm either. Who actually talks like that? Not me! That's what I love about this book. They say and do things the same way I would.
- The characters are still relatable and lovable. I just wish I knew a bit more about them.
- I really like Fiona, but I'm not sure if I should trust her yet.
- McKenna! She's becoming one of my favorite characters. I really hope we get a novella or something about all of the characters, because I definitely need more stories about them.
- This book definitely has some heat, but it's not raunchy at all. It had the perfect amount of tension.
- The writing is the same as it was in Revelation. Fantastic! Just like the previous book, it had me from the first page. I couldn't put it down and then I was upset when it was over.

What I didn't like:
- Again, I wish there was more! I need more!
- Morgana. Do not like. AT ALL.

I'm just going to throw this out there. This needs to become a TV or web series. If that happens.. I'M CALLING DIBS ON EVE'S ROLE. Not even joking.

If you have read my review of Revelation, the first book in this series (go HERE to read it), than you probably know how much I loved that book! And I am very happy to say that my feelings remain the same for Restraint. This book just got better and better the more I kept reading, and it totally broke my heart by the time I finished reading it! Lucky for me though, I received an ARC of Redemption- book three, which I'll be reviewing soon,so I didn't have to wait too long to dive back into Eve's world. I really loved Restraint! The action, suspense, and romance are back in full swing in this book! In fact everything is more intense and doubled in this book than it was in the last one.

As with with the first book, I am still very much in love Eve and Asher. Eve's character just seems so real, and the way she reacts to things during certain circumstances was exactly how I thought anyone would react had they been in her place. She isn't always the super strong heroine who can face anything life throws at them. She has her moments and she isn't afraid to admit when things get overwhelming for her, or when she just needs a break from everything. I feel like I am repeating myself hear because I kind of said the same thing in my review of Revelation, but I just want to say again that I really love these characteristics of Eve. She is most definitely one of my most favorite heroines! As for Asher....well he is still Asher. You know, the whole overprotective, super hot, swoon worthy, with a side of occasional rude attitude that can make him seem like a complete jerk, do I need to go on? I really liked Asher's character in the last book, and didn't think that he could get any better. But I was so wrong. Asher was completely over the top in this book. I felt like the readers got to know him much better and he was just so sweet to Eve...for the most part! As for Gage, well, I still don't know what to make of him. Gage is such a complex character with so many layers and there's still so much to learn about him. The other supporting characters were all awesome as well, and I absolutely adored Abby and Callan, especially Callan with all his cute aprons!

Restraint jumped right back into Eve's story from page one, and had so many twists and turns that it felt like a roller coaster ride- a super fun and enjoyable one, that is. The overall storyline for this book was very interesting and kept me hooked until the very last word! But that cliffhanger at the end...that was terrible! It totally broke my heart, and made me so anxious to find out what happened next. I don't think I can accurately describe just how awesome this book was, or how amazing this series is. Eve's story is really very interesting and unique, and I definitely recommend it to lovers of the paranormal genre!

The author continues with the amazing dark and mysterious covers that I love. This series is an addiction that I'm happy not to let go of. I devoured the reading in a single setting and wanted more! I can't wait to read more by this budding author, because she keeps landing home-runs with what this series. She may have found her a new stalker/reader now! Watch out! This book is even better than the first one! I just wanted to scream at Asher and Eve to just give in! I want the next book already pretty please! The story and writing is even better. In this installment, you get a deeper look at the characters and what they are feeling and thinking. JUST WOW! MORE MORE MORE!

Cannot praise this book enough!

To begin I have already purchased three copies of this book in less than a month. The first was for myself the second two were gifts. I think this book is great for all ages and varying personality types (i.e. artsy, uptight, "no good at stuff like that", wild, vibrant, timid... ANYONE) I have always enjoyed doing creative things... this book has really shown me that I have been restricting myself and has pushed me out of my regular comfort zone. Sensory barriers have been tested for sure, which has not been an altogether unpleasant experience. I was definitely surprised by that! There is a limit to the growth that can happen in your safe, clean and cozy cocoon! Even though there are some kind of disgusting things going on in my journal... it keeps getting more and more pleasant aroma as different ingredients go into it. I also really enjoy how what you do with one page can literally spill over and effect other pages. I have been in this book every day since I got it, more than once a day. I will see something or think of something and say ooh I gotta grab the journal. Although I am working on the prompts in random order (or course) I found it helpful to skim through the "instructions" once through before I did anything else. It's really quite an experience and hopefully you learn things here that can open you up creatively or just breaking any perfectionist tendencies you may suffer. This is either the best or worst thing for OCD-types!!! Maybe the best and worst thing! Like I said, I think there is something to be found in this book/experience for absolutely anyone.

WARNINGS: This book may be seriously addictive to some users. It is likely to deter your attention from other things you "should" be doing and even make more work for you than the work that you are ignorning while do just a little more wrecking. You will make a mess of this book. You will make a mess of yourself, your home, your clothes, etc. etc. If people do not already consider you crazy, they will after they see you working on the wreckage mission. Possible reactions include acting out of normal character, experiencing delight and pride, needing to wash your hands every time you touch the journal, rash and unpredictable actions and results. You could also become dizzy if you breathe too heavy with the glue and any chemical substances used in the wrecking of this book. You may be compelled to buy multiple copies of the book to share with family and friends. This book could actually change your life, I know it has mine. You may see things different in the world and notice art possibilities and inspiration all around you.

In conclusion... The paper does not taste good. You may find a blowdryer handy, on either the hot or cool settings. If you cannot figure out where to begin, I highly recommend the coffee page and or cracking the spine. Both very helpful for those used to taking good care of books. I would love to share some pics of my journal however, it's presently tied up in the bathroom sink. Perhaps another time!

I never even realized I was creative until this book came around. I absolutely love the idea of being able to do WHATEVER you want with this book. This book will save your life, it decreases anxiety and increased my excitement about life. If you are debating purchase please don't anymore!! It's 10$ at first but turns into a priceless item!

If you are looking for something to do alone to entertain yourself once in a while or with a friend or loved one - look no further. You won't get this quirky, weird, different, awesome kind of entertainment anywhere else. Want a place where you can collect stickers, write out four-letter words, spit your coffee, take a book for a walk and so much more? Look no further!

For Bauman fans only

This is not an easy book to read. The author seems to leap from one topic to another, leaving the reader to wonder what he missed. The book also seems to assume that you have read some of Bauman's earlier works since he makes reference to ideas that were not well explained in the book. In general, I was somewhat disappointed in the book.

An excellent analysis of present times

I couldn't put this book down as I started reading it, and have read it twice now, and ordered others from the same author to better understand his framework. It is a very intriguing analysis of present times, that applies to multiple disciplines as a true work of sociology should. After reading the other books from Bauman, I would consider this a quick and inexpensive way to get introduced to the author, although the liquid modernity theory gets developed earlier and in more detail in his writings. Nevertheless this book is a primer to Bauman that anyone should be able to enjoy no matter what their profession is. The insight into current times and the unique perspective it provides will bring together many people regardless of their political or ideological beliefs and where they live.

About the Author
WILLIAM O'GRADY teaches linguistics at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and is the author of several scholarly books. His research focuses on syntactic theory, language acquisition, and Korean.
JOHN ARCHIBALD in addition to teaching linguistics at the University of Calgary, studies the acquisition of phonology and has written several books on the subject.
MARK ARONOFF is professor of linguistics at Stony Brook University and was President of the Linguistic Society of America for 2005. He has written numerous articles and several books on aspects of linguistic morphology, as well as on orthography and the teaching of linguistics.
JANIE REES-MILLER is director of the English as a Second Language program at Marietta College, Ohio. An excellent overview of the huge field of linguistics, but somewhat narrow-minded at times.

A great overview of the incredibly broad and intriguing field of linguistics. O'Grady et al. have done a very nice job presenting a clear, concise, and well-organized view of several essential elements of the field. As a sociolinguist, I definitely recommend this book for anyone looking for an overview of linguistics.

One of my only complaints is that there's a pretty significant bias toward structuralist, Universal Grammar, and generative linguistics, with very little indication given that this is the perspective the book is taking or that there are other perspectives (most notably the up-and-coming usage-based perspective), which may give readers with less knowledge of the field a somewhat unduly narrowed understanding. Overall though, this is a great work that was highly enjoyable and informative!

Lacking without study guide.

I feel like I need to write a review to balance out all these reviews of the condition of the book. This book is terrible for someone that wants to be led through each section slow and steady with optimum examples and reasoning corresponding directly to the examples. The 'appendix' for each section, especially complex sections like Phonology, is painfully short.

It has exercises but absolutely no way to understand how to do those exercises except within the framework of the main definitions of the book and the aforementioned appendix sections. Think of it like a math book with no answers and very few examples on how to work your way through the various problems presented. A study guide is usually very helpful with math but I find it absolutely necessary here.

In short I find this book lacking for sections like Phonology. IMO you need the study guide or it's not going to be as clear as it needs to be. I guess with a great teacher and the book it is possible to work your way through it, but for me I was hoping for more.

TLDR: Get the study guide. This book by itself is mediocre for learning HOW to actually do problems.

Good overall quality

Although used and a paperback edition, this textbook came in excellent condition. The charts and diagrams are very useful to organize and understand information, and it does a good job of trying to teach concepts as well as definitions. My one gripe is that the beginning rushes the content just a little quickly, but with a good teacher (or other resources if you're learning on your own) that shouldn't be an issue. The book does seem to assume that you have some prior knowledge of linguistics.

As for the body of the book, it is rather serious at times but balances that out with lighthearted, corny moments. There are also asides into topics such as geography and anatomy wherever such understanding helps the reader out--if you enjoy that sort of thing (and linguistics), the book will be very engaging. Otherwise, it may be rather trite.

Yes, Introducing Science

I have the great fortune of having the other customer review posted here on Amazon to show just exactly why this book, and post-normal science studies, are so important.

The writer of the preceding review (Introducing Science???) demonstrates perfectly just the kind of fear, knee-jerk reactionism and intentional misunderstanding that permeate the commentary of the conservative "science is king" crowd. To begin, before we go any further: Ziauddin Sardar is one of the most influential and highly respected scholars of post-normal science in the world. His work is has been published and cited constantly, and he has lectured and taught throughout the world. The previous reviewer's ignorance of Sardar's stature and brilliance should not give anyone perusing this listing on Amazon an incorrect idea of the book's worth.

A few more pointed criticisms of the previous review: the first several pages of this book are a parody; Sardar certainly doesn't actually believe that "[almost every benefit of life - from antibiotics to computers, our understanding of human evolution to our ability to land a satellite on Saturn - is a product of science". In the context of this farcical opening section (which is openly and obviously satirical), landing a satellite on Saturn is not a mistake but an intentional gloss on the typical "wonders of science" that are recounted by those who worship science. And, though it might be a "sound bite" criticism, Isaac Newton was, in fact, more of an alchemist than a scientist. He certainly spent more time in his life attempting to change iron to gold than he did on physics. His plagiarism and ethical lapses are well documented.

What the previous review demonstrates perfectly is the fear that scientists demonstrate towards the postmodern critic; fearful of a loss of their media acclaim, their wealth, their culturally imbued sense if superiority. In our society, science is the new religion; any scientific edict must be accepted wholly by everyone or they risk being marginialized as a religious nut or a crazy. Science is never expected to withstand a comprehensive review of itself. We are merely to accept science as sacrosanct.

But this attitude ignores the reality of science. Science, like every other human construct, is the product of conjecture, assumption, prejudice, and greed. Scientists frequently ignore data which does not fit their hypothesis, or worse, fabricate data which does. Scientists frequently Scientist are often close-minded, rash, self-obsessed and defensive. Everyday, old scientific notions are replaced. And yet we still do not learn the lesson that science is fequently wrong; we cling to the notion that science is infallible, continuing the current worship of the unreal notion of "objective fact" with scientists as our new high priests.

None of this is to argue that science is unimportant or unnecessary. Science is a powerfull and important tool that, when used appropriately and responsibly, can improve our lives. Understand that scientists would never offer a similar equivication to science studies or postmodern criticism in general; science is a dogma, and as such, science can extend no respect to any disciplince which does not toe its line. A scientist has no respect for an opinion which is not his own.

What ultimately must be done--as Sardar, and Science Studies, have pointed out-- is to move from questions of truth to questions of use. Does science have use? Of course; the world needs asprin and radios. But is science the truth? No. It is a man made viewpoint, a system-- often very useful-- for organizing the symbols we have created in the world. It is a part of human consciousness, a perspective. It is not a perfect and correct view on an objective and static world. What this book accomplishes is to provide an introduction to anyone who wishes to learn why.

Introducing Science???

This book also goes under the name, "Introducing Science" but as far as its attempt to 'introduce' science, it is a travesty. Virtually no actual science content is discussed and what is, is invariably wrong or we get straw man arguments--if at all. As far as I can tell, this book is more concerned with misconstruals, false statements and bald assertions made by those in science and technology studies.

Here is just a small sampling of quotes with my commentary:

Page3: "Almost every benefit of life - from antibiotics to computers, our understanding of human evolution to our ability to land a satellite on Saturn - is a product of science."

Land a satellite on Saturn?? This is news to me as from what I saw on TV, the Cassini orbiter is presently orbiting Saturn and the Huygens probe landed on Saturn's moon, Titan, on January 2005. (Not surprisingly, the comment about a satellite `landing' on Saturn preceded Cassini arriving at Saturn.

Page101 "Certain laws of science, as Indian physicists have begun to demonstrate, are formulated in an ethnocentric and racist way. The Second Law of Thermodynamics, so central to classical physics, is a case in point. Due to its industrial origins, the Second Law presents a definition of efficiency that favours high temperatures and the allocation of resources to big industry. Work done at ordinary temperatures is by definition inefficient. Both nature and the non-Western world become losers in this new definition. For example, the monsoon--transporting millions of tons of water across a subcontinent--is "inefficient" since it does its work at ordinary temperatures. Similarly, traditional crafts and technologies are designated as inefficient and marginalized."

It is stated here that the 2nd law of thermodynamics is formulated in an ethnocentric and racist way!! because it defines efficiency by favoring high temperatures and also in its allocating of resources to big industry?? So, the conclusion here is that work (people laboring) done at ordinary temperatures is deemed inefficient. The authors have completely misconstrued what 'work' means and what the 2nd law is. The 2nd law basically states 3 things: a) heat spontaneously flows from a hot body to a cooler one; b) one cannot completely convert heat into work or into other forms of energy and; c) the amount of disorder of an isolated system--entropy--increases over time. Statement 'b' can refer to a heat engine where efficiency is defined by the temperature differential used by the engine to do work. `Work' is defined in physics as a force acting upon an object causing a displacement. It is different than the economic notion of work, but it does apply. The 2nd law states that if people are working (creating forces to displace objects), then in the total amount of energy expended, some will always be lost due to heat. That is why we sweat when we engage in vigorous physical activity: to get rid of excess heat. So the error here is in equating people with heat engines. They are the opposite. They convert chemical energy into work and waste heat.

One actual example in the book--the Woburn case of Massachusetts from the early 80s--is touted as an example of "post-normal science" (Funtowicz and Ravetz 1992) where the community gets involved in policy-based scientific research. (In post-normal science, "facts are uncertain," "values are in dispute," "stakes are high," "truth is replaced by quality," "the expert is replaced by an extended peer community," "scientific certainty is replaced by extended dialogue," etc.) Specifically, the case involved a mother who suspected that the local water supply was the cause behind her son contracting and dying of leukemia. After getting no cooperation from the local health authorities, she got the town to initiate epidemiological research (using scientists) where they were able to establish a causal connection between a local company's carcinogenic waste and a clustering of leukemia cases that appeared in the town. A successful civil suit was eventually launched against the company. But note that this example runs completely counter to the notion of post-normal science: facts *aren't* uncertain, truth *is* established, values *weren't* in dispute (people are dying), the dialogue on who was responsible *ended*, the experts, the scientists *did* the research, etc. In short, the standard canons of science were used to empirically establish a causal connection between a carcinogen and a group of leukemia cases. WHAT gets researched is a completely different question from HOW research is done. And saying that the public should be scientifically involved doesn't address whether, in this case, they will be able to assess the complexities of disease clustering in epidemiological research or not.

In the brief mention of Alan Sokal's hoax (who submitted a spoof article in the trendy Social Text journal in 1994) and other scientists who have counter-critiqued most of this critical nonsense--the discussion basically reduces to political name-calling. The scientists who decided to take on the science studies pretenses are branded "conservatives;" or there is a conservative backlash afloat in academe that will have no truck with these trendy, rad notions. But no mention is made in the book as to how the scientists exposed all of this silliness. (See; Fashionable Nonsense by Sokal and Bricmont)

A major error that virtually all science studies authors commit is a failure to distinguish between basic science, curiosity-driven research and its application or technology. Facts are continually conflated with values. Science then gets blamed for all the technological disasters where the real blame lies in the *application* of scientific knowledge. E=mc2 does not entail the atom bomb anymore than Christ entails the inquisition. As Paul Gross and Norman Levitt put it in their hard-hitting counter-critical book, Higher Superstition; "For every bomb there is a vaccine; for every ICBM, a CAT scanner."

Consequently, I don't see how obnoxious sound bite diatribes ("Newton was mean and vindictive. He was more into alchemy than science. He plagiarized Muslim scientists." p42) supposedly has anything to do with introducing science.

Turgid and disappointing

Not a fun or easy read. It's disappointing both because it's an interesting topic that fails to be well written and organized, and because the snappy graphics make it seem like more fun than it is. Note that I'm giving it 2 stars on its own merits, as if I (an adult with a PhD) had picked it up to read for my own interest. I'm only reading it because my 14-year old was assigned it for summer reading -- think I'll give her science teacher zero stars!
