About the Author

Kip Irvine has written five computer programming textbooks, for Intel Assembly Language, C++, Visual Basic (beginning and advanced), and COBOL. His book Assembly Language for Intel-Based Computers has been translated into six languages. His first college degrees (B.M., M.M., and doctorate) were in Music Composition, at University of Hawaii and University of Miami. He began programming computers for music synthesis around 1982 and taught programming at Miami-Dade Community College for 17 years. Kip earned an M.S. degree in Computer Science from the University of Miami, and he has been a full-time member of the faculty in the School of Computing and Information Sciences at Florida International University since 2000.

OUTSTANDING!!

OUTSTANDING!!! Now that Kip has removed a lot of the dependence on the custom libraries, this is hands down the very best book on Assembly Language, and I've read quite a few. Please do not base your opinions on previous releases of this series. This one (7th Edition) is a homerun!

Kip Irvine does a great job of explaining the basics of Assembly Language. I just finished my college course and this book was very helpful. The index contains a lot of entries thus making it very beneficial for browsing and searching specific items. The reading is also smooth. Two thumbs up for this book!

More of a Manual than a textbook

The textbook covers a lot of material and you should learn everything you need but the writing style is difficult to follow at times. Because there's so many instructions and mnemonics to learn, it covers everything with brief examples that will be hard to understand at first, specially chapters 2 through 4. I realized late in the game that the book covers details more and more as you proceed so don't get too stuck when certain things don't make complete sense. There's still something missing about this textbook. It feels more like a manual than a textbook book.

About the Author
Lama Thubten Yeshe (1935-1984) was born in Tibet and educated at the great Sera Monastic University. He fled the Chinese oppression in 1959 and in the late 1960s, with his chief disciple, Lama Thubten Zopa Rinpoche, began teaching Buddhism to Westerners at their Kopan Monastery, Kathmandu, Nepal. In 1975 they founded the international Buddhist organization, the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT), which now has more than 160 centers, projects and services worldwide.

Nicholas Ribush is the founding director since 1996 of the Lama Yeshe Wisdom Archive, dedicated to preserving the teachings of Lama Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche. He graduated from Melbourne University Medical School in 1964 and first encountered Buddhism at Kopan Monastery in 1972. He was an ordained monk from 1974 to 1986. He helped establish Wisdom Publications with Lama Yeshe in 1976, established Tushita Mahayana Meditation Centre in New Delhi in 1977, and Kurukulla Center in Boston in 1989. Ribush was a member of the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT) board of directors from 1983 until 2002. He lives in Lincoln, Massachusetts.

Lama Thubten Zopa Rinpoche is the Spiritual Director of the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT), a worldwide network of Buddhist centers, monasteries, and affiliated projects, including Wisdom Publications. Rinpoche was born in 1946 in the village of Thami in the Solo Khumbu region of Nepal near Mount Everest. His books include Transforming Problems into Happiness, How to Be Happy, and Ultimate Healing. He lives in Aptos, California.

Caution - Prerequisites

I wanted to let folks know that I have not read this book (yet). The preface provides a clear and specific warning that the material is only for those that have completed Highest Yoga Tantra Initiation and I was able to confirm this with the nun at my local FPMT center. In typcial Buddhist fashion she didn't really provide a "rule" but did offer "it would be best if you waited..." sort of advice. As such I now have a ribbon around this book that says "read me when highest yoga tantra completed". I think this would be a good book for the generally curious and Lama Yeshe's writings that I have read are just amazing, but if you are making a purchase as part of your journey on the path it may be useful to you to be aware of the request Lama Yeshe makes in the preface.

Not idle reading

This book is an advanced work for experienced Buddhist practitioners in the Tibetan tradition. I doubt that other readers would get much out of it. It is like a cookbook, you have to do what it says if you want to satisfy yourself. And if you want to cook, you need the utensils. In this case you need to be studying with a lama, have received initiation and have some experience practicing in order to work with this book.

The teacher of the text is in the Gelug tradition. I am a Kagyu, so that colors what I say. The author is very formal and rigorous. He makes much of what I perceive as minor matters (don't move your meditation cushion, keep it in the same place throughout your retreat). So I filter out some of what he says as not essential.

I was practicing Vajrasattva when I bought this book and I wanted something to keep the practice fresh. This provided it.

If you are practicing Vajrasattva, this book will be very helpful. There are also some things in this book that could be helpful to other practitioners.

NO EMPOWERMENT REQUIRED!

This along with with a few of the other of the Vajrayana sadhanas like the Medicine Buddha sadhana do NOT require empowerment to be able to use. I have verified this with several monks and ngakpas.

With that being said, receiving the empowerment will drastically improve the benefits associated with this particular sadhana.

If you are interested in taking a proactive role in your spiritual and mundane well being I highly suggest the practice of Vajrasattva to burn up and eliminate negative karma that causes us to suffer spiritually and materially.

All of use have done wrong things in this life and in the past incarnations, this is a wonderful and powerful practice to be able to handle our negative karmic debt in a responsible way.

Vajrasattva is like catholic confession on steroids! I recommend everyone Buddhist or not (I am not) to practice karmic purification as a way to help avoid unnecessary suffering in our lives.

This two-volume set focuses on the interface between physiologic mechanisms and diagnostic human engineering. Today numerous biomedical sensors are commonplace in clinical practice. The registered biosignals reflect mostly vital physiologic phenomena. In order to adequately apply biomedical sensors and reasonably interpret the corresponding biosignals, a proper understanding of the involved physiologic phenomena, their influence on the registered biosignals, and the technology behind the sensors is necessary.

The first volume is devoted to the interface between physiologic mechanisms and arising biosignals, whereas the second volume is focussed on the interface between biosignals and biomedical sensors. The physiologic mechanisms behind the biosignals are described from the basic cellular level up to their advanced mutual coordination level during sleep. The arising biosignals are discussed within the scope of vital physiologic phenomena to foster their understanding and comprehensive analysis.

Novel concept of discussion - connecting human physiology with engineering

As indicated by its sub-title “Linking Physiological Phenomena and Biosignals”, this book follows a novel concept - and I think it is the latter that makes the text exceptional. Usual books on biomedical signals are focussed on the detection and processing of signals, while their closer physiological interpretation is left to the physician or the biologist. In the here given case, the author provides a clear physiological basis, prior to the discussion of the corresponding signals. Starting with mutual interactions of ions, cells, tissues and organs, the text continues with interrelations that show how vital parameters such as respiration, blood pressure or oxygenation are reflected by electric, acoustic or optic biosignals. This strategy favours both an understanding of optimum signal detection and a deeper interpretation of results.

I appreciate the composition of this book. The running text offers quite simple readability, supported by numerous figures with consistent indication of location and type of applied sensors. On the other hand, experts in biomedical engineering will welcome the high amount of comprehensive footnotes.

About the Author

Mike started programming on a PDP-8 using a teletype terminal. As the personal computer revolution got going he sold his car and rode a bike for several months to raise cash to buy an Apple II computer. He wanted to write a chess program but couldn't find a good assembler, so he took a summer off to write his own. Two years later he finished ORCA/M, which went on to become Apple Programmer's Workshop, the Apple-labeled development environment for the Apple IIGS.

Born the same year as Steve Jobs and Bill Gates, Mike made the mistake of getting an education instead of getting rich. A slow learner, he graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1977 with a degree in Physics, earned an M.S. in Physics from the University of Denver, and was Working on a Ph.D. when he started making more money from his sideline software company than from the Air Force.

Since then Mike has developed numerous compilers and interpreters, software for mission-critical physics packages for military satellites, plasma physics simulations for Z-pinch experiments, multimedia authoring tools for grade schoolers, disease surveillance programs credited with saving lives of hurricane Katrina refugees, advanced military simulations that protect our nation's most critical assets, and technical computing software for iOS.

Mike currently runs the Byte Works, an independent software publishing and consulting firm. He is a PADI scuba instructor who lives in Albuquerque with his wife and cat, enjoying being an empty nester and spoiling his grandchildren.

Good book with a few caveats

The book has lots of great examples of programming your iPad/Iphone using a language called techBASIC.
techBASIC is used to avoid the need for a full-blown development system using Objective C and does not require payment to Apple to join the developer program. The first few projects are based only on the iOS devices internal sensors such as accelerometer and magnetometer.

Some caveats:
1. The most projects require external hardware that must be purchased separately. For example, some use a $25 sensor from Texas Instruments. Others use a model rocket.
2. The book only gives you access to pre-made techBASIC programs. To write your own or modify the ones in the book requires the purchase of the full-blown app for fifteen bucks on the app store.

My other issue is that the techBASIC language itself is a little cumbersome or maybe ugly is a better word. I wished it was cleaner and more Python like and I think that would make it more approachable for the newcomer to programming.

Overall it is a good book with very good projects.

It's kind of a moot point now because the BeagleBone Black and Raspberry Pi are a lot cheaper and aren't tied to an ecosystem that's designed to enforce stability at all costs, but iOS still has a fair amount to recommend it. So, if you need a book for that... this isn't quite it. (But it'll probably serve your purpose anyway.)

See, this book is mistitled. It's actually a book about the TechBASIC environment and how to use it to interact with the outside using something other than the Lightning port. The language itself is a commercial product available through the App Store, but it happens to interface with a number of peripherals, including the HiJack (a serial interface for the headphone port) and the TI SensorTag via Bluetooth Low Energy, as well as the sensors built into iOS devices. There's also some vehicle automation, including packing an iPhone into a model rocket for data gathering and controlling a model truck via Arduino and Bluetooth LE, and an iPad Pong game using two iPhones as controllers. (The tricorder bit is basically the up-and-running chapter at the beginning, covering datalogging basics.) I want to criticize the use of third-party commercial software in a book meant for makers, but to be honest, the realities of the iOS environment mean this is probably about the best way to go about using iOS for maker projects.

So... if you know what's actually in the book, it will do its job fairly well. It's just not quite what its title claims it is. Enjoy.

Great for Beginners!

Yet another Arduino book but this time it's for iPhone or iPad projects. Covers several projects like metal detector, radio control and rocket flight tracking. Uses the iPad's sensors linked to an Arduino. Uses simple techBASIC for app development.
