JEFFREY B. FERGUSON (Ph.D., Harvard University) is Assistant Professor of Black Studies and American Studies at Amherst College in Massachusetts, where he teaches a course in the Harlem Renaissance. He is the author of The Sage of Sugar Hill: George S. Schuyler, Satire, and the Harlem Renaissance (2005). His 1998 dissertation on the African American journalist George S. Schuyler was awarded the Helen Choate Bell Prize. He has been a fellow at the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute.

Too many errors

While the selection of documents is solid, the introduction is full of mistakes. Grimke's Rachel was not "the first play in the United States to feature an all-black cast"--there were plenty of nineteenth-century plays with all-black casts, especially those of the Hyers sisters. The music for Shuffle Along was written by Eubie Blake, not Hubie Blake. Ferguson lists among the attendees at the famous Civic Club dinner in New York on March 21, 1924, Langston Hughes, who "read from [his] poetry," and who was actually in Paris, and Zora Neale Hurston, who was in Washington (neither of them attended). He writes that Hurston saw "black folk culture as a product of invention and art rather than of instincts and proclivities," but the opposite is true--see her famous essay "Characteristics of Negro Expression." It's astonishing that a man who teaches a course in the Harlem Renaissance at Amherst College can be so careless about its history.

SUPERB!

If you thought the Roaring Twenties were just about dancing white people, think again. This book gives us a vision into the African-
American culture in Harlem that seems has often been neglected in studies of the time period. The book was definitely an eye-opener for me and I was glad to better understand the lives of those different from myself from a very detailed and careful analysis of the Harlem Renaissance. The contrast of the African-American culture in the * cities * compared to that same culture in * rural * areas is stark. But you won't see just how different lives in distinctly different areas of the country can be until you read this book. Excellent!

This book really works!

I originally purchased this book in 1995 and used it several times for job interviews. I loaned it to several friends over the years, and I can honestly say that until the most recent economic downturn, it had a 100% success rate!

Unfortunately whoever I loaned it to last never returned it, so I had to buy another copy.

The tips are great, action steps make sense and going through the exercises in the book prepare you well for a successful hiring process. Highly recommended!

Tom Jackson books came out in the 1980s and early 1990s - there simply haven't been the type of guides that he has written since then. I was glad to have found them again, and they helped my recent interviews a lot!

About the Author
Jerry V. Diller has been teaching for over 30 years at all levels of higher education. He has been on the faculty of at The Wright Institute, University of California at Berkeley, University of Oregon, and Lane Community College in Eugene, Oregon. He was awarded the "Innovation of the Year Award" for teaching at Lane Community College. In his private practice he has been a partner in Multicultural Associates, a consulting and training organization focusing on issues of cultural diversity and social justice.

Jean Moule is Assistant Professor of Early Childhood and Adult Education and the "Immersion" Program Coordinator at Oregon State University. Jean began her higher education journey with a major in Art and a minor in Psychology from the University of California at Berkeley. She received a master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Oregon and her doctorate from Oregon State University with a dissertation titled "My Journey with Preservice Teachers: Reflecting on Teacher Characteristics that Bridge Multicultural Education Theory and Classroom Practice."

Excellent resource for educators

I have assigned this book, or parts of it, in my courses at the university level. My students have found it to be clearly written and helpful in understanding the basic concepts of cultural competence. Although some people often take a defensive posture on these issues (see excellent article by Jean Olson called Detour-Spotting), most of my students are there to learn to be teachers, so, thankfully, they maintain an open mind. The book explains terms, gives examples, and synthesizes research. It is not as dense as some other texts on this topic, and is more cohesive than some of the excellent edited volumes available. For those reasons, it is a good introductory text.

Practical Book for Teachers!

I'm using this text as a required book for my multicultural education course. I'm enjoying it because it presents the material in a way that beginning students can understand, it provides practical frameworks such as the cultural iceberg, and it gives students ideas on how to deal with different issues in the classroom and in real life. For example, it introduces microaggressions (the kind of subtle racism that is more common today) and then gives them language to disrupt it in a non-confrontational manner. The text covers the most common cultural groups present in schools and how to be more culturally aware and self-aware as a teacher.

As in any multicultural education text, it may rub some whites the wrong way. This is inevitable, in my experience, and I work one on one with irritated students to explore those feelings, decide the meaning of them, and help them learn to be culturally competent white educators. I think there is a place for all of us at the table, and we each have valuable contributions in this area--that is why I work closely and sincerely with students who are frustrated by this topic in general.

Each chapter ends with practical tips for all grade levels (K-12). This has been a missing piece for me in multicultural education text, and that is one of the main reasons I chose this texts. We all benefit from immediate application.

About the Author

KIT PANCOAST NAGAMURA, a Tokyo resident since 1991, has a Ph.D. in literature and has won various teaching and writing awards. She works as a freelance writer and editor, and as an acquisitions editor at Kodansha Ltd. She has authored or coauthored three English-language phrase books for Japanese learners of English. She regularly writes for the Japan Times and other media outlets.

KYOKO TSUCHIYA was born in Nagoya, Japan, and graduated from the Tokyo University Faculty of Liberal Arts, where she majored in American studies. She is a professional translator. Among the works she has rendered into Japanese are Emotional Intelligence (Daniel Goleman), Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood (Rebecca Wells), and The Yearling (Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings).

Beside on problem, it is a good book for those who can read Hiragana.

I am a Japanese mother who has America born half Japanese children. I went to library and borrowed a lot of Japanese study related books and CD. And this one was good comparing other book if you have a basic Japanese knowledge and able to read Hiragana. Surprizingly many of other Japanese study book had not Furigana on the top of Kanji, and this book has Furigana on the top of Kanji. So, while you are able to study Kanji, you have no trouble to pronounce it. However, some body else mentioned, this book has section which calls "Private Zone", it is not definitely appropriate for my kids who is using this book ( she is 13). I removed that section and copy MP player CD eliminating that section to her smartphone. Anyway, it is very generous that they have this CD attached to this book, they have common phrases. The publisher, Kodansha. is the one of biggest publisher in Japan. They are not specialized in learning Japanese book, but fiction, non-fiction and magazine. This is done by very reputable Japanese publisher. They most likely spend good amount of money on writing this book.

Outstanding, real-life, must-have guide!

This is all you need to get started on your path to getting along in Japan. Each phrase is chosen by the authors with deep sensitivity to language that will not only get your needs met, but also present you as a polite human being to your listeners in a country where that is very important.

It is filled with information that allows you to reach towards more than superficial relationships. You will have ways to express yourself effectively on an emotional and even sexually intimate level. Goes where no other guide has gone before in this area. The presentation is humorous and well organized making it fun, readable, and easy to find what you need quickly when you are on the spot and need help!

wide-ranging and very inclusive.

I'm using this book as an aid in some mutual-tutoring sessions with a Japanese girl who is trying to get into a local university. She tutors me in Japanese, I tutor her in English. For me, the book has been particularly useful as a source of everyday language which--as any student of the language knows--is confoundingly different from the acceptably formal/polite level taught in textbooks. I pick a particularly confusing phrase, my study partner then dissects the phrase and explains what all those "na"s and "no"s and "de"s really are. Oddly enough, it has also been helpful to her, as I read off a phrase and she tries to render it into decent English. Obviously our needs are very specialized, but there are some highly useful phrases in here, for the traveller and for the expatriate trying to set up household in Japan.
