Gated communities are a new "hot button" in many North American cities. This debate has intensified since the hard cover edition of this book was published in 1997. Since then the number of gated communities has risen dramatically. In fact, new homes in over 40 percent of planned developments are gated n the West, the South, and southeastern parts of the United States. Opposition to this phenomenon is growing too. In the small and relatively homogenous town of Worcester, Massachusetts, a band of college students from Brown University and the University of Chicago picketed the Wexford Village in November of 1998 waving placards that read "Gates Divide." These students are symbolic of a much larger wave of citizens asking questions about the need for and the social values of gates that divide one portion of a community from another.

All across the nation, Americans are forting up - retreating from their neighbors by locking themselves behind security-controlled walls, gates, and barriers. An estimated 8 million Americans live in gated communities today. These communities are most popular in Los Angeles, Phoenix, Chicago, Houston, New York, and Miami. This trend has become popular in both new suburban developments and older inner-city areas as residents seek refuge from the problems of urbanization. But what does it mean for the nation? Fortress America is the first sweeping study of the development and social impact of this rapidly growing phenomenon. While early gated communities were restricted to retirement villages and the compounds of the super-rich, today the majority are for the middle to upper-middle class. But even existing modest-income neighborhoods are using barricades and gates to seal themselves off. The book looks at the three main categories of gated communities and the reasons for their popularity: lifestyle communities, including retirement communities, golf and country club leisure developments, and suburban new towns; prestige communities, including enclaves of the rich and famous, developments for high-level professionals, and executive home developments for the middle class, where the gates symbolize distinction and stature; and security zones, where fear of crime and outsiders is the main motivation for fortifications. They argue that gating does nothing to address the problems it is a response to. They propose alternatives, such as emphasizing crime prevention, controlling traffic in neighborhoods, designing new developments to encourage sustainable communities, and creating metropolitan regional planning governance.

About the Author

Edward J. Blakely is Dean of the School of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Southern California. His previous books include Planning Local Economic Development (Sage, 1994) and Separate Societies (Temple, 1993), winner of the 1994 Paul Davidoff award for the best book in planning. Mary Gail Snyder is at the Department of City and Regional Planning at the University of California, Berkeley.

So many great tips in this book that really work! It's nice having the Men's and Women's meal plans separately with achievable calories per day. The seven stages are not easy and thats why I see the results and highly recommend this diet to anyone needing to get healthy again. Dropped 10 pounds the first week!!!

Great approach. I've tried dieting for years but this makes you rethink the whole process. Just starting the Seven Stages. Lots of great help to be successful. Wonderful recipes, menu planning and I thought the exercise would be a problem. I just need to make time for 30 minutes of walking which isn't difficult. I'm on my way to a new me. Lost 12 pounds in the first 4 weeks!!

Christian Geiser, PhD, is Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at Utah State University in Logan. Good basic information for people just learning MPLus

I found this book very useful, but it would be good to have an updated version that included a broader range of models, for instance Latent Profile Analysis, not just LCA. One of the most useful things about this book were the tips on preparing data to be transferred from SPSS so that it could be used in MPlus. This isn't covered very well in the MPlus Manual. In addition, there are numerous tips throughout for the novice user of MPLus. Well worth the money.

Great book for SEM

I'm using this in addition to the Structural Equation Modeling book by Kenneth Bollen. It's a very helpful complement, and would probably be useful on its own if you had a strong base understanding of the statistical techniques already and just needed to get more information on modeling in Mplus.

Detail-obsesive, practical and pedagogic

This book was the perfect complement to my Advanced Statistic seminair in the PhD. In the live discussions we had the chance to analyze the benefits and applications of different data analysis techniques, while professor Geiser explains with perfect germanic order the HOW TO to prepare the data, program in MPlus, parametrize the analysis and interpret the results.
A note of caution: You will need the software, your hypothesis and databases to actually make good use of the book.

The Airport Romance I've Always Wanted

Rewriting the Ending is the love story of Juliet and Mia, soulmates who happen to cross paths in an airport lounge. Only, their luck ends there. Juliet and Mia both come from broken families and broken homes, and they bring with them more baggage than just their physical carry-ons. When they part ways to reach their differing destinations, they keep in touch with each other, but their pasts continue to haunt them, too. Only this time they have each other to help them deal with their ghosts. And that makes all the difference.

Juliet and Mia have instant chemistry. Not sexual. Not romantic. Just personal. They get along like they've known each other for years, and they both recognize that their bond is special as soon as they meet. Their romantic relationship develops gradually and genuinely as a product of that connection rather than lust at first sight. It's the inevitable, slowburn build up of fairy tales, and it's a glorious ride. Their personalities mesh, their banter is effortless, and it's oh so easy as a reader to root for them. Few couples I've encountered in books are as meant to be as Juliet and Mia.

The only thing that brought this book down for me was the amount of trauma in both Juliet and Mia's backstory. These two have been through a lot. Like a lot. From muggings, homophobic parents, ex spouses, and several dead family members, these two deserve a period in their lives where things aren't going wrong just for once. While the book does work its way to that (spoiler alert) happy ending, there's a very long list of obstacles between the protagonists and their goals. While navigating a few hurdles is okay, this felt more like training for a marathon. Admittedly, the amount of conflict in this book makes the payoff that much sweeter, though, and, again, this was the only weak point I personally found in the book.

This book is an easy 4 out of 5 stars for me. It's a sweet, simple read. Not too short, not too drawn out, and with characters that are lively, relatable, imperfectly human, and feel like real people in the way they interact with one another and handle the situations the world throws at them. If anything about "chance encounter in an airport turns long distance friendship turns long term relationship" sounds appealing to you, give this book a shot. It won't disappoint.

I'm savoring every page, hating for the book to end. Rest assured that within several weeks, I will read it again. Most books I finish go immediately into "dismiss" category, this one I will keep ready to read again. Here's hoping a another book real soon.

Rich Dialogue and Well Written

This story of Juliet and Mia was one that was enjoyable to read, but left me wanting more in some places. Juliet is a friendly author attempting to find her muse in Belgium who plays everything remotely personal close to the vest and Mia is a seemingly out of touch high class socialite who seems to be looking for something more real.

hp tune does a great job of creating depth in these characters and I appreciated that a lot of that depth came from realistic and intriguing conversations between the two of them. The author does not pull back from difficult conversations and even more importantly I appreciated that the character's difficulties were not immediately fixed and resolved just because they met their match in the other.

One thing that I would have loved to see in this book is the actual development of these two women's relationship. Some of it was shown, but the time skips made it seem to go from their fateful (and well done) meeting in the airport to very serious very quickly. There are definitely plot points that affect this, but given how much I loved their back and forth I would have loved to see more of that develop.

Overall, this was a good read and one that I wouldn't hesitate to pick up again.

Entertaining and inspiring

This book picks up where "Closer Than Ever" leaves off. And when I say that, I mean RIGHT where "Closer Than Ever" leaves off--like the next weekend. I wouldn't recommend reading it without reading "Closer Than Ever," because I felt like the first book did a lot with character introduction.

Aspects that could be annoying to some people:
- There are a lot of different characters who we see Brianne interact with, and certain relationships seem to change rapidly--but let's face it, at twelve, you see so many different people, and friendships DO change rapidly!
- It's low-level reading, no great vocabulary, not much need for reading-between-the-lines--but that makes it more true to life for a twelve-year-old; some conversations are really simple.
- There's no main conflict that lasts throughout the novel; it's more about the gradual growth of a young girl. So some chapters could seem like they don't contribute to the plot, but still give a glimpse into the character's lives.

Brianne is a mild-mannered twelve-year-old, and we don't see angsty outbursts. She has one or two "girl moments." There's also a nice blend of spiritual growth. I like that these books talk about the everyday struggles of a girl who has committed to living her life by certain standards. You don't see her decisions and convictions tested, but you can see that she's made them. There are also some nice lines that come from Brianne's dad or Austin's dad (both pastors) that strike a chord, and are inspiring even to someone who's not a teenager.

This book (and the others that I've read from "Heaven in My Heart") are short, and cover a very short length of time.

Life in Brianne's world

Brianne, 12, is going to visit Sarah, her friend who has moved away. Silas is moving into where Sarah and her family used to live. Brianne has very supportive parents who converse with her in a mature way. They have talked about not walking or being in a secluded place with a boy. In the beginning of the book Brianne is feeling like a slave though as she is not getting paid to look after her four younger siblings one weekend. Resentment sets in but as she prays about it later, she realizes that she was wrong.

Sarah is having a hard time fitting into her new school. Austin, Joel and Ryan are some of the other boys in this story and they are very respectful of the girls. There are true friendships here depicting how the teenage years should be like. They look out for each other and pray realizing that they can't get through life on their own.

I highly recommend this book for girls. It is gentle, healthy reading where topics are discussed (no sex, just hand holding, kissing, boyfriend, girlfriend). I do suggest reading them in order as there are some thing talked about in here that if you have not read Book 1 (Closer than Ever) will really not make any sense. EXCELLENT example to be setting our girls.

Really heart-felt. It is about a girl who is being strengthened in her faith with Jesus. She uses her faith to work through the hard things in life.
