About the Author

J. K. Rowling was born in Chipping Sodbury in the UK in 1965. Such a funny-sounding name for a birthplace may have contributed to her talent for collecting odd names. A Rare Edition of Harry Potter

When I first heard that Harry Potter had been translated into Irish, I was ecstatic to find a copy, but when I searched around the first time (over a year ago), the only copies I could find were listed at $150+, so I wasn't going to get one of those. Finally, after waiting for close to a year, Amazon (U.S.A.) finally has it for sale! I can't say how good it is to finally have a copy.

Most people when they're learning Irish read classic literature, so it's good to have a book to be able to read that comes straight from our own times. I also find it helpful to use the English version side-by-side so I can see how certain things were translated into Irish.

If you're a beginning Irish learner, though, I would try for something simpler first, as this book would be better suited for a more advanced Irish speaker, because of the strange and often difficult vocabulary (such as in the title, '�rchloch' won't be found in any dictionary because it's a combination of words).

Regardless of whether you'll be able to read it as soon as you get it, it's worth it to simply have a good piece of literature in Irish such as this.

Not just the best Chinese cookbook. One of the best cookbooks ever.

I've had The Key to Chinese Cooking for 27 years; it was one of the first 5 cookbooks in my collection. I now own somewhere around 300 cookbooks, but this is still among the best.

Kuo got everything right. In an era when no one had heard of dim sum or regional Chinese cuisine, she included long sections about ingredients, techniques (including improvisations when you lack authentic equipment), and cooking styles. Every technique introduced includes introductory recipes, such as steamed lemon chicken in the steaming section. There are also lots and LOTS of recipes for every conceivable category, and it probably goes without saying that they're uniformly excellent. The book falls open to spicy pork with peanuts; hot and sour soup; tangerine peel chicken; shrimp fried rice.

But what sets this apart is the writing and instructional style. Kuo has become my touchstone for friendly, technical writing. She knows the reader hasn't deep-fried a duck before, so she gives careful detailed steps that somehow manage to both reassure you and keep you moving. It's never too much information, making you feel as though a task is daunting. I was lucky to find this book when I still a cooking beginner, because I credit the author with making me unafraid to try new recipes and techniques.

My only criticism is that her estimates of serving portions are unreliable. Sometimes she'll say that a recipe serves 4, when served with rice, and we get just a meal for two. That's the case for one of our favorites, chicken in black bean sauce. (I must have a dozen such recipes. This is the one I use.)

Overall though - this is one of my favorite cookbooks. Highly recommended.

I taught a Chinese friend - in China - to cook with this book

I lived in China eleven years; studied Chinese there and taught English. I love cooking and love Chinese food, but was dismayed that after years of attempting to copy my friends' cooking there, the results were barely remotely the same. (They don't use measuring spoons there, and few of my friends had a gift of teaching.) Finally I remembered this cookbook that my mother fell in love with and had given as a gift to each of her daughters, and on a trip home for the summer, dug mine out of my attic boxes, and brought it back to China so I could learn to cook!

Result: I did, and my friends there finally began to enjoy and even compliment my Chinese cooking. And one friend whose mother never taught her to cook learned staying weekends at my apartment, reading the cookbook (she was an English major), and then following the clear directions. I gave her a copy for her wedding present. She is now a good cook, too!

The thing of the book is, Irene Kuo is a gifted teacher, and a very good writer to boot. If you like cookbooks, you could read this one just for sheer enjoyment. She presents, then totally demystifies key concepts that I had suspected I was missing but couldn't guess at. She gives you confidence. And yes, the recipes are very authentic, though they don't cover every region's cooking. It's so helpful that she lists the ingredients with their Chinese names, though in China these names can vary a tiny bit regionally, and so I'm thinking they may in the States, too (I still live abroad.)

This is the best chinese cookbook you will ever see.

My husband is from China, he tells me I cook like his mother now. The copy I have is old and broken I've used it so much. I was hoping to get another copy. It's a great cookbook. Cooking techniques and recipes are explained in depth. There is also a glossary of ingredients so you can figure out what something is and where to buy it.

About the Author
Richard Rusczyk is the founder of Art of Problem Solving. He is co-author of the Art of Problem Solving, Volumes 1 and 2 and Intermediate Algebra, and author of Introduction to Algebra, Introduction to Geometry, and Precalculus. He was a national MATHCOUNTS participant in 1985, a three-time participant in the Math Olympiad Summer Program, and a USA Mathematical Olympiad winner in 1989. He is also the co-founder of the Mandelbrot Competition. Mr. Rusczyk is a graduate of Princeton University. David Patrick is an instructor and curriculum developer at Art of Problem Solving. He is the author of Art of Problem Solvings Introduction to Counting & Probability, Intermediate Counting & Probability, and Calculus textbooks. He had the sole perfect score in North America on the 1988 American High School Mathematics Examination, was a USA Mathematical Olympiad winner, and was a top-10 finisher on the William Lowell Putnam Mathematics Competition. Dr. Patrick is a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University and has a Ph.D. in Mathematics from MIT. He taught mathematics at the University of Washington before joining Art of Problem Solving in 2004. Ravi Boppana is the Director of Mathematics at Advantage Testing, as well as the co-founder and co-director of the national Math Prize for Girls competition, sponsored by the Advantage Testing Foundation. He was 27th in the country on the William Lowell Putnam Mathematics Competition. Dr. Boppana received a Ph.D. in Computer Science from MIT at the age of 22. challenging material for elementary students, but worth it. make them think and analyze.

I bought this book for my 6th grader. There are different levels of difficulty, so that kids get used to progress from easy ones to difficult problems. The problems are not plug-in formula problems. They are more thinking problems, which ask kids to sit down and think thoroughly. There are many examples of Math Counts and AMC problems too. Excellent source for kids who love challenging math practice.

Yeah, get this too, when you buy Prealgebra, which I've also given five stars. There's a lot of value in seeing fully worked and explained solutions, even if you've already gotten the right answer. The solutions often provide insight into the way a budding top mathematician might think.

LOVE THIS BOOK ! It's hard to put down. You find yourself saying "yeah, that's happend to me"! She explains the steps to help you understand and communicate with the deseased that is SO understandable, you won't find yourself lost and give up before you even begin, as what happens with so many other books. I plan on reading this again and marking pages and highlighting areas. I knew you could communicate with humans, but was taken back by her ability to reach our deseased pets as well.(with a phone-Medium session with Janice) I've been waiting for a long time for the book to come out and it exceeded my expections by a mile. A MUST buy if you want to learn to communicate with your deceased love ones.

Almost makes this democrat a monarchist

This is one of the few available biographies of the longest living monarch. It is part coffee table book and part overview of the King's life. What it is not is a Kitty Kelly type biography. I don't think one would be possible for King Bhumibol. He has led a truly exemplary life and this book details many of his projects reaching out to the poor in Thailand.
If you go to Thailand one of the first things you'll see are Long Live The King bumperstickers everywhere. There are lese majeste laws which prevent speaking ill of the monarch (apparently a government thing since the King tends to be against them and keeps pardoning people) but he is truly loved that if you spoke ill of him the Thai's would treat it like you just insulted their favorite grandfather. What ill can you say of a monarch who is an accomplished jazz musician and composer who has jammed with Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong etc. (Lionel Hampton called him the "coolist king ever"), is an award winning photographer, who stepped in and talked with the poor farmers and and worked out a sound economic way for them to stop growing poppies, who,when the recent flood was threatening the Grand Palace told the government to take care of the people first and not the palace. It's quite an evolutionary approach to the monarchy in Thailand and he is loved as much as his grandfather who ended slavery there.
If I have any criticism it is that I would have liked to have seen more of the King's photographs and a discography. Small quibbles though.

I know 25$ or so seems a lot for a biography but when you recieve it you'll know why it costed that much. The quality of the book is exceptional and its very large. Furthermore, the information is accurate, detailed and non bias in my opinion.

Wonderful book. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Greatly enhanced my knowledge on Thai history, and the very pragmatic programmes that King Bhumibol has initiated to help his citizens.
