As a young boy, Stephen always felt different from his friends – he was smaller, less self-assured and often sickly. He struggled with classroom learning and school sports. Only as a shy, embarrassed ‘sixteen-year-old with the body of a boy of ten’ was Stephen diagnosed with Klinefelter’s syndrome, a medical disorder resulting from his cells having one X chromosome more than is normal for males. With appropriate treatment, Stephen’s body began to develop into that of a man, and he felt able to embark on a ‘normal’ life, one that included girlfriends, marriage and a career. But his struggles were far from over, as the syndrome had left its indelible mark on this man’s psyche, affecting his life in ways he could never have imagined. Only after many hard-learnt lessons and a number of traumatic and life-changing events did Stephen reach a point of spiritual strength from which he could begin to tell his story. Living with My X is the astonishingly frank and deeply personal account of a man living in the shadow of a genetic condition that is less rare than one thinks.

oersonally revealing

The author gives a lot of himself in this book. It must have, at times, been quite difficult to reach inside and try to understand himself. We have a Klinefelter's son, so I know firsthand some of the social difficulties, personality disorders, and indecisiveness described by the author. It was enlightening and, for those of you who do not understand KS, this book could be a good, helpful read.

To really appreciate this book you have to be in the author's shoes, you have to have been there. I've been there! I'm almost finish reading the book. I had to replace my computer during the time I had purchased the book. That is why the long delay. Nevertheless I enjoyed reading the book.

Great convenience

An ominous paragraph on one of the publisher-added front pages of this facsimile edition warns that the book is being republished because of its cultural value despite the possibility that some pages may have reproduced badly, even to the point of illegibility. That must be a series-wide warning. Fortunately, there were no such problems with the text used for this title. Occasionally it may be hard to make out the breathings/accents combinations (or is that my aging eyes?), but basically the entries are perfectly legible.

It's a great convenience having a lexicon limited to only the vocabulary used in Herodotus' Histories. It saves a great amount of time compared to flapping through LSJ. The translations seem to make the effort to reflect the root meanings of the words as well as providing a more supple English synonym. I appreciate that.

I purchased the hard-bound edition, thinking it would be more durable. No doubt. But it's a little stiff, and, frankly, this lexicon will never see as much use as the general lexicon. So I think the paper-bound edition is probably the better value.

An utter failure; offensively, anger-inducingly awful

Neil Gaiman writes, in his introduction to this book: "I was taken aside by a man who had read Sandman #1 just after it came out, asking how I dared put one of the Words That Must Not Be Written Down in my comic; I hated to tell him where that word had already been written down, and where I had found it." He leaves us with that, our fascination dilated, appetites whetted, attention held. Just what is he referring to? I've read this whole book, and I still don't know.

Much has been made of the mass of literary, historical, mythological, folkloric, and comic-nerd allusions encrusted into The Sandman like the oddments in McKean's covers. Karen Berger says there's a million things each issue that goes over her head. "Nobody was expected to get all the references", writes Gaiman. Nothing, then, could be more appropriate than an annotated Sandman. And the format-- full-size reproductions of each page, with giant margins for notes. This is a major step in comics history. Unfortunately, it's a botched job. This is one of most frustratingly failed attempts at prestige I've encountered in ages. I can't believe Gaiman would consent to its publication, let alone his name being all over it.

First of all, influences/inspirations are never discussed, and references/allusions are seldom glossed. Many specific tidbits about folktales and mythology which I've always wondered about, especially in regards to names, are not mentioned here. Another surprise for me was that many of the comic book references are barely dealt with, or dealt with not at all. In addition to that, there are some pop/lit/nerd references I happened to recognize myself which the annotator failed to catch, giving me that terrible and awkward feeling that I may have done a better job, having no background in this sort of thing. In short, this book is useless for the main thing it purports to be used for.

The occasional references that are addressed are pretty much only historical, and are presented in a very dry way (dates, ownership, etc). Some of the things which do get space are questionable. For instance, page 32 begins with a long paragraph detailing the early history of British tabloid The Daily Mail, because one of the panels shows a copy of that paper. There are notes telling you whenever an ad appeared after that page; each issues' solicitation ad copy is also given. Most of the notes are along these lines, or to mention in what future Sandman issue a character returns or a plotline is resolved. Most of the pages do not have notes at all.

As if all this were not enough, the notes are written as though the Sandman stories are 'real', from a perspective inside the fictional universe or whatever. I read: "Little is known about 'Roderick Burgess', the name adopted by Morris Burgess Brocklesby. He was born in..." this is the beginning of a long paragraph detailing Mr. Burgess' key dates and associations ("apparently", I thought, "a lot is known about him!"). I was floored to discover that Gaiman used an actual historical personage, but became confused when I read of Mr. Burgess' association with Aleister Crowley, a figure about whom I happen to know a thing or two. By the time I read the whole paragraph, I was skeptical enough to look online. We were right the first time: obviously, nobody named Roderick Burgess actually existed. He is a creation of Neil Gaiman's. But our annotator writes as though Burgess did in fact exist. This calls into question ALL of Klinger's notes: for instance, is "Jamaican bamboo", a remarkable flower that only blooms every 33 years (pg 21), real or fiction? Was the "sleepy sickness" a true historical phenomena or an invention of Gaiman's? I must use the internet to find these things out, so I am essentially annotating The Sandman myself. This book is worthless.

There is one thing that may make this book essential to Sandman nuts-- not merely the "fan" like myself, but the obsessive collector geek who feels that Sandman is the greatest work of art ever created by humankind. They will already be buying this book, but I'll mention the item anyway: Script excerpts. Klinger had access to all of the original Sandman scripts, and he has quoted from them extensively, especially when the art or final dialogue differs from them in some way. Even this was just not as interesting to read as I thought it would be.

I'll leave prospective buyers with a typical excerpt that illustrates some of my problems with this book:

"PANEL 5. The Magdalene Grimoire was probably named after Magdalene College, Cambridge, the library of which may have possessed this volume for a time before it was acquired by the British Museum. Books often acquire a descriptive name reflecting the custodian-- e.g., the Bodleian First Folio (to distinguish the volumes of other collections' First Folios of Shakespeare). A "grimoire" is a textbook of magic. Many famous grimoires were published, including [...] Curiously, the Magdalene Grimoire appears again in the mid-20th Century, in connection with the attempted resurrection of super-hero Green Arrow. Its last-known human owner was Stanley Dover; it is currently owned, according to the last report, by Thpot the Monster." (pg 22)

-inclusion of irrelevant information (mention of Shakespeare folios; list of other grimoires)
-discussion of fictional things as though they are real ('Magdalene Grimoire'; the entirety of the last two sentences)
-lack of any kind of citation (even comic book titles/issue numbers)

It's a big long book, it wasn't very fun to read, and I can honestly say I didn't learn a ___ ____ thing.

Great idea, so-so execution.

As a fan of annotated books (especially Les Klinger's "Annotated Dracula"), I was expecting a bit more from this volume - I understand why the comics in the collection were printed in black & white (aside from doubling the price of the book, color artwork would've demanded the book itself to've been printed on thicker paper resulting in a heavier, more unwieldy tome), but the lack of notes from Neil Gaiman himself is a weird oversight, especially considering that Gaiman wrote this book's introduction and edited/proofread Klinger's annotations.

Granted, some of Gaiman's editorials from the original print run of Sandman which document the creation of the comic are reproduced in the 'Annotated Sandman', and I respect Gaiman's decision to hand the writing of the annotations entirely over to Klinger, but the decisions to treat Gaiman as if he was dead and unavailable for comment (as mentioned in the book's introduction) was a strange decision that hamstrung the writing of this book, for if Gaiman HAD been dead, then Klinger would've been free to beef up the annotations with information about Gaiman's life and the creation of the Sandman series, but, seemingly out of respect for Gaiman, Klinger keeps his notes focused squarely on the text of the comics (which is rare for an annotated book like this) without any context about the who/what/how/why of the comics' creation, which can make for some pretty dry reading.

Not what I expected, but...

There are things I absolutely love about The Annotated Sandman, and things I am enormously disappointed with.

I am hugely disappointed with the lack of commentary on most pages, especially as this was sold as Gaiman's way of jotting down his reasons for writing The Sandman, and his driving inspirations for the stories. Given what a landmark series The Sandman was and what an influence it continues to be, I expected more profound notes than the history of British rock bands or song lyrics to show tunes. I would much rather have had in-depth commentaries from Gaiman, the artists and the rest of the creative team. Instead, we are left with an enormous amount of blank pages with no comments whatsoever, and a plethora of the enormously profound "In Issue --, this page was followed by an ad page."

If you are buying this edition for stellar commentary and insight into the creative process, the characters and the world itself, you will be highly disappointed.

What I LOVE about this volume, is that it is presented entirely in black and white. The uncolored pages are absolutely gorgeous and add a whole new layer of depth and emotion to the story. I find it interesting that so many of the reviews I have read elsewhere are put off more by the lack of colorization than the trivial (and often absent) annotations. For me, the new visual experience was the best thing about this volume, and the primary reason for its high rating.

I could never get the hang of the lat 80's-early 90's style of coloring and always considered it a bit on an eyesore. (I know this is how things were done in that age due to printing limitations, etc, but it has still always been a turnoff for me personally). Seeing the Endless, especially Dream and Death, rendered this way almost makes it feel as though this is how the stories should've been presented in the first place. It is beautiful, and it is haunting in a way that the bold, stark colors are not. I can't wait to see future issues (Season of Mists, The Kindly Ones and Michael Zulli's visually stunning The Wake, in particular) rendered in this stark style.

On a side note: Readers may want to be careful with the pages when thumbing through this book. The black paper is highly absorbent and shows fingertip oils very very easily.

Unique twist for me. A very good beginning to a new series.

Dr. Megan Chase is a counseling psychologist and has a new radio call-in show. Though Megan hates the show's motto, her boss insists Megan begin each call by stating that she will slay their personal demons. But her clients are not the only ones that seem to believe the motto, so do the personal demons. Although Megan does not know it at first, she is the only human without a personal demon on her shoulder, whispering in her ear. This fact, coupled with her being psychic, makes her the target of an army of tiny personal demons and of a soul-sucker known as The Accuser.

Enter the fire demon called Greyson "Grey" Dante. He represents a demon family that want to use Megan as a way to gain more power. Grey becomes her most powerful ally against the creatures, including zombies and vampires, out to kill her. Grey has three demon bodyguards (named Malleus, Maleficarum, and Spud) constantly at her side, as well as a witch named Tera teaching her how to focus her psychic abilities. To top it all off, Megan's boss has a tabloid reporter, Brian Stone, writing an article about "Dr. Demon Slayer", who has been digging into Megan's past and finding things she does not want to talk about.

***** I found this story to have a unique twist on the over done subjects of demons and psychics. If there are other stories out there like this one, I've never read it. A fanciful walk on the creepy and dark side that will keep you up reading long into the night. A great beginning to a new series. *****

Hated the characters too much to continue reading

First of all, I LOVED the Downside Ghosts series by the same author, which is why I started reading this book.

This book is NOTHING like the Downside Ghosts series, and I could only get through about 1/3 of it before I finally just put it down for good. It's not very well-written, but more importantly, I HATE all of the characters.

The main character is a born victim. By the time I put it down, about 4 different men (that she barely knew) had grabbed her arm so hard it hurt and all she could say was "You're hurting me." Everyone is angry at her, but I'm not sure why. She doesn't seem to either, but apologizes anyway. People walk into her house and she wonders vaguely who they are and wishes they would leave. People say the most terrible things to her, and she thinks about how hurt and upset she is that they're saying them. She has no redeeming qualities, and she's the heroine of the story! I like flaws (her Downside heroine is a drug addict & liar... but at least she's likeable, sharp, funny, and you're pulling for her), but this was just too much. I couldn't suspend disbelief enough for her to be believable (and I was totally willing to go with the whole demon angle).

She was so passive that I just couldn't take it anymore and had to put it down. That combined with the utterly ridiculous plotline that demons have misunderstood that the show's tagline is just that... a tagline. And that she's NOT an actual demon slayer. I knew about this plot before I read the book, obviously, and I assumed there would be some humor in regards to it or that it would be better explained why the demons are that stupid. But no. Are we to believe they take EVERYTHING literally and they they're also gunning for Sarah Michelle Geller because she played Buffy?

I don't understand how this book got so many good reviews. I love PNR. I usually love anything paranormal. I love Urban Fantasy, sci-fi, you name it. But not this. I highly recommend the author's other series as well as the Darkfever series by Moning.

Devilishly Delighful Urban Fantasy

Personal Demons is a supersexy urban fantasy, some might say paranormal romance, but like all good demon fiction, the sin of lust takes precedence over anything as wholesome as that other L word. Megan Chase, psychic therapist (though the psychic part is a secret), is up to her ears in crazy clients, radio station politics and zombies! After a near fatal attack, she's let in on a little secret: those personal demons she claims to slay on her radio talk show? Um..a wee bit miffed. It seems she's been marked for death, which is really bad timing because she's being tailed by a reporter hot for a story and a demon hot for some tail. To make things right, Megan must do battle with the spawn of Satan (both in and out of the bedroom) and the skeletons in her own closet.

Kane serves up a malevolently entertaining entry into the urban fantasy genre, the action is fierce and the sex is scorching, her characters are well drawn--Megan, in particular, is so engaging you'll be missing her from the second you turn that final page--and the story clips along with the urgency of a freeway car chase.

Highly recommended!

Invaluable legal resource for the privacy practitioner!

One of the best books on privacy available on Amazon. It is a rare feat that Dr Lothar Determann accomplish with this concise and comprehensive book - he actually delivers practical advice on most of the relevant aspects of managing privacy within an enterprise.

The book is a fun read. Great use of plain language and no buzzwords or legalese that cripple most other books in this field.

I am myself a lawyer and a privacy expert and I turn to Determann's guide for overview and reflection.
We use the guide in our law firm's internal education and training of our associates to great enjoyment.

A Remarkable Introduction to Sea Life

I first ran into this book in the bookstore of the Institute of Oceanography at La Jolla, California. I was tempted to buy it, but put it off for a while because I live very far inland and could not justify the purchase. I later bought it elsewhere, but passed it on to my daughter who lives much closer to a sea coast and gets out there occasionally. I was glad to give it to her because after going over this volume for a few months I can say that this is probably the best first book for anyone interested in marine biology. It is certainly very beautifully designed and well written.

The color plates and great black and white drawings really illustrate this book in a way that is seldom seen in such works. Numerous details are covered in the text that are backed up by the superb illustrations. The plates of marine habitats and their inhabitants were especially effective in this regard.

If you can get just one book on marine biology, this would be it!

Excellent guide to the marine world

A "must have" for both armchair and amateur naturalists with a keen interest in the marine world. I'm a scuba diver who lives in the Pacific Northwest but takes vacations around the world. The joy of this book is that it begins with the beginning--the origination of the oceans, including a bit of tectonic theory--and progresses to a detailed description of many of the genera in the oceanic realm. It's not a detailed guide to my particular corner of the world, but as a general guide to the world's oceans it can't be beat for both it's breadth and depth. This is a beginner's book with some real 'meat' to it! I highly recommend it.

Sealife : A Complete Guide to the Marine Environment by Geoffrey Waller is the best single volume guide to the marine eviroment. It was published by the Smithsonian Institution, which should speek for its self. Inside is pages apon pages of text and diagrams on subjects from ocean trenches to marine otters. It includes beautiful color plates of vertabrates and invertabrates in there natural habitat. This book is a must for any one who works with or enjoys ocean life.
