This reissue includes a new foreword by David Shields, Design Curator of the Rob Roy Kelly Wood Type Collection at the University of Texas at Austin, discussing the renewed interest in the subject since the mid-1990s as well as ongoing research into the history of wood type.

About the Author
Rob Roy Kelly established professional graphic design programs at the Minneapolis College of Art, the Kansas City Art Institute, and Arizona State University. He also served on the faculty of Carnegie Mellon University and Rochester Institute of Technology. In 1989 he received the first Master Teacher Award given by the Graphic Design Educators Association. In 2001, a web site titled Everything is a Work in Progress was developed by graduate students at Rochester Institute of Technology to present Kelly's collected writings on graphic design education. He died in 2004, and his obituary in The New York Times noted that his "influential book on 19th-century American wood type prompted a major typographical revival in the 1970's."

great historical reference

Rob Roy Kelly had a fascinating background and left a wonderful legacy for students interested in old typography. Wood type had a place in every print shop composing room. This book tells the story of wood type, it's uses and it's charm. Anyone interested in type as it existed prior to phototype and digital typography should have this outstanding book in their library. The showings of old wood type is invaluable.

I just wish there was more of it

One of my favorite books on typefaces, this wonderful reproduction gives us the history of wood type's evolution in styles as well as technology. Mr Kelly did a wonderful job in collecting both samples of the lettering as well as the history that goes with them.
My biggest wish was that there was even more samples and information.
A must for any serious font fanatic or history buff.

This book is a justifiable classic, and a must-have for any typographer, type designer, lettering artist, or graphic designer. It is also of great interest to anyone interested in American printing and design. Wonderful book.
